Sotavento - Fuerteventura
Sotavento is one of the most famous kite/windsurf beaches on earth - a vast tidal lagoon on the Jandía peninsula that turns from flat, shallow, beginner-friendly water at low tide into a merged lagoon-plus-ocean setup with swell at high tide. It suits everyone from first-timers to competition freestylers, which is exactly why world championships have run here for decades. The beach itself has almost no town - a couple of large hotels sit right on the lagoon - so most people base 10-15 minutes north in Costa Calma, a purpose-built German-leaning resort strip with restaurants, shops and a real (if quiet) evening scene. It is not the place for anyone wanting nightlife energy or a local-Spain feel - it's a wind-sports package-holiday landscape, laid-back and slightly sleepy outside the dunes and lagoon.

Editor's brief
The lagoon is not permanent and it is not a low-tide feature: it fills at high water on spring tides around new and full moon, and Rene Egli's own 2026 timetable lists only 12-18 lagoon days a month, 30-105 cm deep, peaking between roughly 13:00 and 15:40. Kitesurfing is banned on Costa Calma beach by the Pajara municipality - the resort town everyone books is legally not a kite spot, and ION CLUB says so twice on its own site. Rene Egli holds the exclusive teaching licence for the entire 4 km lagoon, so there is one school at the marquee spot and one alternative, ION CLUB, 7 km south at Risco del Paso. Logistics: FUE airport is ~50 km north, an hour by car or 75-90 minutes on an operator coach; Tiadhe Line 10 is the only scheduled bus and is useless with board bags; no taxi fare is published anywhere, so agree it before loading. Costa Calma, 3-4 km from the launch, has Santander and CaixaBank branches, Targobank and 24/7 Euronet ATMs, two pharmacies, a Disa station open 06:00-22:00 and German-speaking private doctors - this is a card destination with easy cash. The serious gap is medical: Hospital Virgen de la Pena in Puerto del Rosario is 54 km north, past the airport, and nothing hospital-grade exists on the whole Jandia peninsula. Nearest public health centre is Morro Jable, 14 km. Two walk-to-the-water addresses exist, both at Playa Sotavento: Hotel Paradisus by Melia Fuerteventura (formerly Melia Gorriones) and adults-only ZEL Fuerteventura, with the Rene Egli centre and its lockable storage boxes in the palm garden between them. Everything else commutes. The four ION CLUB partner hotels in Costa Calma - SBH Monica Beach (4*, all-inclusive, AC and free WiFi in every room, free parking), Taro Beach, Palace, INNSIDE - front a beach you cannot kite from, and answer with a free 7 km shuttle to Risco del Paso. Robinson Jandia Playa is adults-only at Morro Jable, 14 km south, and is not on the lagoon whatever the old note said; Robinson Esquinzo Playa is the family option and transfers guests 11 km to Risco del Paso free of charge. Money nobody quotes up front: EUR 110 a day, EUR 443 a week or EUR 927 for twenty days of premium kite rental, plus EUR 750 for a 12-hour beginner course, minus 5% if you pay a week ahead. In July and August Rene Egli's flexible rental tickets are reserved for clients aged 60 and over - peak season is a fixed-block, book-early market, not a walk-up one. The 2026 World Cup, the 38th at this beach since 1986, is PWA windsurf and GWA wingfoil with no kite discipline, and during competition week your riding area shifts 200 m south rather than closing. Wind is a summer certainty and a winter gamble: over 4 Bft on 95-100% of July days against 45-60% in December, measured on site since 1985. Water is 19-23 C, so a shorty covers the year. Decision one: pick your week by moon phase, not just forecast, or accept that half your days have no lagoon. Decision two: lagoon-front at Paradisus or ZEL with no car, or Costa Calma for food, ATMs and cheaper beds plus a daily shuttle or hire car. Decision three: are you here for flat-water progression, where the spring-tide window and the Rene Egli licence are the whole product, or for open-beach riding across 13 km of Sotavento and Risco del Paso sand, which is available every day the trade wind blows.
What nobody tells you first
- Sotavento is tide-AND-moon dependent, and the popular description has the tide backwards. The famous flat lagoon fills at HIGH water, and only on the big spring tides around new and full moon - Rene Egli's 2026 timetable shows only 12-18 lagoon days per month, with maximum depths of 30-105 cm peaking in the early-to-mid afternoon. On the other half of the month the lagoon does not form at all and you ride the open beach. Check the published lagoon timetable, not just a wind forecast.
- The beach and hotel zone at Sotavento itself has very little independent food/shop choice - stock up or plan to drive to Costa Calma.
- Beach access along this stretch is via numbered parking accesses spaced out over several kilometres, not a single beachfront strip, so know which access matches your hotel/school.
- It's an arid, sun-exposed environment with little natural shade on the beach - sun protection matters more than most riders expect.
- You cannot kitesurf from Costa Calma beach - the municipality of Pajara forbids it, which is why ION CLUB runs Costa Calma as windsurf/wing only and puts its kite school 7 km south at Risco del Paso. If your hotel is in Costa Calma, your kiting is at Sotavento or Risco del Paso, not out the front door.

The four Costa Calma partner properties (SBH Monica Beach, SBH Taro Beach, SBH Palace, INNSIDE) front a beach where kitesurfing is prohibited by the Pajara municipality; kiters staying there commute 7 km south to Risco del Paso on the club shuttle. The only walk-to-your-kite addresses are Hotel Paradisus by Melia Fuerteventura and ZEL Fuerteventura at Playa Sotavento, served by the Rene Egli centre.

- The lagoon's unique tidal behaviour - flat, shallow and sheltered at low tide, opening to the ocean swell at high tide - is what made it a natural stage for both windsurfing and kitesurfing world championships.

A classic plan is 7-10 days based at Sotavento or Costa Calma riding the lagoon across tide cycles, with a side trip north to Corralejo's dunes (and optionally a ferry hop to Lanzarote) to round out the non-kiting half of the trip.
