Getting on the water Rules & access Wind Water

Nananu-i-Ra is a small island off Rakiraki on the north coast of Viti Levu, sitting where the Vatu-i-Ra passage through the Bligh Waters squeezes the trades and speeds them up. There is no one beach to learn the name of: the Wind Sports Fiji operation at Safari Lodge moves riders between Home Beach, Kite Point, Sandy Point, Foil Bay and boat-drop downwinders depending on the wind, the tide and your level.

Season and water temperature

May to October is the dependable core; April and November usually still work, and a season stretched to January is optimism rather than planning. Water is warm all year: around 29 C in February, about 26 C in August. The wetsuit question is a rash vest.

Skill level and logistics

Beginners do fine in the sandy sheltered zones with a boat behind them, but the island rates intermediate as a whole, because the reefs and the tide decide where you ride and you will not work that out on your own in three days. This is a lodge and boat destination rather than a beach you turn up at: the transfers, the gear and the lesson slots all have to be arranged before you land.

Lessons and refreshers

2026: lessons have to be pre-booked; a true beginner needs six hours of formal instruction before taking gear out alone, and an experienced rider hiring kit must first do a one-hour refresher demonstrating riding upwind, body dragging, board recovery and correct use of the safety systems.

Maritime authority and ferry

2025: Fiji's maritime authority requires hotels, resorts, commercial marinas and coastal establishments that operate or facilitate water recreational activities to hold a Certificate of Compliance, with penalties available under the 2014 recreational-boat regulations; the named activities include jet ski, kayak, banana boat, snorkel tours and paddleboarding, and kiteboarding is not listed by name.

2026: there is no scheduled public ferry to the island. The boat from Ellington Wharf is arranged by your accommodation and runs on their schedule, typically FJD 30-60 per person return, sometimes included in the package.

New legislation

2026: the Commercial Use of Marine Areas Bill passed Fiji's Parliament on 19 August 2026 and repeals the Regulation of Surfing Areas Act 2010, but it takes effect only once assented to, gazetted and given a Commencement Notice, and no fee regime for recreational users has been published.
