trade
fills in: A typical Fiji trade-wind day can start glassy and build around lunchtime.
Typical strength
About 11 kt as an all-year, all-hours average at the Matei airstrip a couple of kilometres from the bay, out of the east-southeast, with gusts on record to 34 kt. The trade-season afternoons are the ones that hold a kite; the annual figure includes every glassy morning and every calm day. Nothing is measured on the bay itself.

The quiver, in words
No local size table exists. Indicative for a 75-85 kg rider through the April-November trades: 10-12 m on an ordinary filled-in afternoon, 8-9 m when the wind squeezes up between the islands, 13-15 m or a foil for the light end and the late-morning build. Derived from the wind figures at the nearest airstrip, not from riders on the beach.

modelled
A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.
Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Rider tips
- Ask about the 20-mile downwinder along Taveuni's coast; the route runs past 600+ waterfalls.
- The kite safari goes out on a private 45' catamaran to uninhabited atolls; it is sold as optional safari time inside the kite packages.
- Do your first sessions with the school; the passes, downwinders and safaris are all resort-run.
- Do not count on freeride rental outside lessons; equipment is confirmed for lessons only.
- Check the domestic baggage allowance for the Fiji Link leg to Taveuni; Vacala Bay Resort warns it is lower unless you ticket straight through with Fiji Airways.
- Treat the reef passes, downwinders and yacht trips as guided advanced sessions, not beginner terrain.
