The quiver, in words
8-12 m covers the trade-wind season. Indicative for a 75-85 kg rider, derived from the 15-25 kt range rather than measured here: 9-10 m through most of September to November, 12 m for the lighter 15-17 kt days early in the season, 7-8 m when it pushes past 25 kt.There is no rental, so the quiver you bring is the quiver you have.
Direction to shore
Varies by reef and route. SE trades suit Pipe and Frigates and line up with the Coral Coast waves; Shifties, J's and Vunaniu want north-quadrant wind or none at all.

modelled
A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.
Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2020-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water
Type
mixed reef-break, lagoon, flat-water and open-ocean/downwinder terrain
Standing depth
The lagoon inside the fringing reef is shallow over sand and coral and runs on the tide: snorkelling it is a high-water activity and it thins out as the tide drops. The reef flat is shallow enough that booties are standard and stocked on site. Behind the reef breaks the bottom drops away very quickly. No standing depth in metres has been published for any part of it.
Tides
The reef breaks work around high tide: roughly three hours before to about an hour and a half after is the usual window, and a few breaks handle lower water better. The lagoon follows the same clock, snorkelable at high water and shallow on the drop. Reef breaks have a very quick drop-off at the back.
Temperature
26°C summer · 26°C winter
Wetsuit
Rash vest, long-sleeve wetsuit vest, 2 mm top or spring suit can be useful for wind chill; boardshorts/bikini conditions by day are reported for Fiji's Coral Coast.

Rules & access
- 2026: Fiji's parliament passed the Commercial Use of Marine Areas Act on 20 August 2026, repealing the Regulation of Surfing Areas Act 2010. The 2010 law had vested every surfing area in the country in the Lands Director on the government's behalf and made access free, permit-free and exclusive to nobody for fifteen years. Under the new framework customary iTaukei owners can apply to the iTaukei Fisheries Commission to have qualifying marine areas vested in them, and negotiate compensation and commercial arrangements with operators; fees for reef and surf-break access are widely expected, and none had been published by September 2026. Public access, freedom of movement and innocent passage are preserved in the text, and fishing is excluded from the definition of commercial use. Nothing kite-specific has been published. The reefs off Vunaniu sit inside a registered qoliqoli, so in practice the resort's boat and its standing with the neighbouring villages are what put you on the water.
Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.
Rider tips
- Bring every piece of kite gear you might need, spares included; there is no hire here.
- Pack booties and a reef-cut kit; the riding and the surf are all over shallow coral.
- Budget for boat time if you want the outer reefs; Frigates is about 19km offshore and boat-only.
- Ask the staff about the long coastal downwinders and the lesser-known spots along the way; launches and pickups are staff-assisted.
- Plan reef sessions around high tide: the usual window runs from about three hours before to one and a half hours after.
- Book September to November for the surest wind; the Coral Coast trades can start earlier, but that is the window the resort itself stands behind.
