  • Founded in 1485 by King John II of Portugal.
  • The settlement was completely destroyed by pirate raids in 1590, prompting construction of Fort São Clemente between 1599 and 1602.
  • Pilots José Manuel Sarmento de Beires and António Jacinto da Silva Brito Pais departed from Campo dos Coitos near Milfontes on 7 April 1924 on the pioneering Lisbon–Macau flight.
