When it fills in

On the days it works, the Nortada tends to fill between late morning and midday, builds through the afternoon and holds until sunset. That is the pattern for the coast as a whole; no Malhão-specific record of onset exists.

Malhão is a big natural Atlantic beach north of Vila Nova de Milfontes, inside the Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina Natural Park: sand and dunes, rock underfoot in places, and a sea that is usually rough.
Surfers use it, and so do kiters and wingfoilers, but kiting only works on the right thermal day, because the NW Nortada blows offshore on this west-facing coast more often than not. When the angle does line up, what you get is clean wave riding and a lot of empty beach.
What you do not get is a kite school, a rescue boat or a rental counter; there is parking and there are toilets. The months worth watching are May and June, then September and October. During the 2026 bathing season, 30 May to 30 September, stay outside the swimmer areas and follow the flags and any marked channel.
Beginners have no business here, and an intermediate should have a local rider alongside before pumping a kite.

thermal

fills in: On the days it works, the Nortada tends to fill between late morning and midday, builds through the afternoon and holds until sunset. That is the pattern for the coast as a whole; no Malhão-specific record of onset exists.

Typical strength

The Nortada runs about 15-25 knots on a working day along this coast. Nothing has been measured at Malhão itself, and here that same wind usually arrives offshore, so a strong forecast is not the same as a rideable day.

Inconsistent. The NW Nortada often blows offshore here; on the right thermal day it turns into clean waves with room to use them.
Thermal days come one at a time rather than as a season you can plan a freeride trip around. Fewer riders come here than to the better-known spots north and south, and spot-specific safety detail is thin.

The quiver, in words

Indicative from the 15-25 knot Nortada rather than from local sessions: a 75-85 kg rider is on 9-12 m for an ordinary thermal day, 7-9 m once it pushes past the low twenties, 12 m and up on the edges of the day.Surf and an offshore-leaning angle are reasons to take the smaller of two kites and one you can relaunch in waves.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

Not a stand-up beach. Sand shelves into open Atlantic shorebreak, and no depth profile has been published for either the north or the south section.

Tides

Open Atlantic tidal beach; kite-specific tide dependence is unconfirmed.

Wetsuit

Summer shorty or 3/2 when windy; winter 4/3 or 3/2 with boots based on nearby Alentejo sea-temperature guidance.

Your level

Advanced rating is based on the offshore-prone Nortada, open Atlantic surf, rocks, remoteness and the absence of any published kite rescue or school infrastructure. Nothing published describes a beginner-safe kite setup at Malhão.

Rescue

No kite rescue exists here. Malhão Norte and Malhão Sul are 2026 Blue Flag bathing beaches from 30 May to 30 September, so lifeguard cover is seasonal and is no substitute for kite rescue.

Launch

Rules & access
2026: Malhão Norte and Malhão Sul are listed as Blue Flag/bathing beaches with season 30/05/2026 to 30/09/2026. The 2026 Portuguese beach edital prohibits surf, kitesurf, windsurf and similar sports in areas reserved for bathers and requires nautical craft to use defined channels/marked areas where applicable.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Do not rig on a standard offshore NW day unless a local rider confirms the angle and you have an escape plan.
  • Check Malhão Norte and Malhão Sul access separately; the beach splits into several sections and has two main car parks.
  • Carry all of it: kite gear, water, a repair kit. The beach has parking and toilets and little else.
  • Give the surfers on the main peaks a wide margin.
  • Treat Malhão as a forecast chase on a surf trip, not a beach you book a week at.

FAQ

When is the best time to kite at Malhão?

Best months are listed as May, June, September and October, but kiting depends on selected thermal days rather than a regular season.

Is it suitable for beginners?

No, it is rated advanced only due to the offshore-prone Nortada, open Atlantic surf, rocks and lack of verified kite rescue or school infrastructure.

What is the wind like?

The NW Nortada often blows offshore on this west-facing coast, so the spot is inconsistent and condition-dependent, though good thermal days can bring clean wave sessions.

Are there rules or restricted zones?

Malhão Norte and Malhão Sul are Blue Flag bathing beaches from 30 May to 30 September 2026, when kitesurf is prohibited in areas reserved for bathers.
