On the clock

13:00 · 18:00

Afternoon: roughly 13:00-18:00 is the usual session window.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

São Torpes is the best-documented spot in this group, an open-ocean Alentejo beach a short drive south of Sines with clean small to medium waves and shallow access off the sand. The wind is the summer Nortada out of the north quadrant, cross-shore, useful from May to September and filling in through the afternoon rather than the morning.
It is an intermediate and expert beach, and a sane place for a competent rider to start riding waves. The hazards are ordinary ones: the mole at the north end, rocks in one section, rips that reportedly form near those rocks, swimmers through the season and a launch that is medium rather than generous.
It is a 2026 Blue Flag bathing beach, so the swimmer areas are off limits and the lifeguards get the last word. The port and the old power station sit behind the beach, which is either scenery you ignore or scenery you do not, and there is no kite school on the sand: the operation based there teaches surf.

Reliable by Alentejo standards but not as strong as Guincho or Sagres.
May-September is the main Nortada season.

The quiver, in words

For the 16-22 kt range, roughly 9-12 m for an average-weight rider and smaller on the stronger days. That is derived from general Portugal/Nortada practice, not from anything São Torpes-specific.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

Shallow sandy access off the middle of the beach, but this is open Atlantic with a shorebreak and no measured standing zone.

Tides

Rideable at all tide levels, with the water changing character between chop, flat and wave. Low tide uncovers rock patches, concentrated at the north end near the concrete pier; mid to high covers them and gives a cleaner surface. Booties are worth packing.

Temperature

21°C summer · 15°C winter

Wetsuit

Summer 2 mm long-sleeve shorty or 3/2 if windy; winter 4/3 or 3/2 with 3 mm boots.

Currents

No authoritative current description was found; rips reportedly form near the rocks, and locals know where.

15–19°C water
Open Atlantic sandy beach with small to medium clean waves. Wide beach, some rocks, shallow access, water warmer than the beaches nearby, and a mole/breakwater at the north end.

Your level

not for beginners hereintermediateadvanced
Intermediate and expert. São Torpes is approachable for a rider new to waves, but the rocks, the waves, the mole at the north end and the summer bystanders keep it off the beginner list.

Rescue

No kite-specific rescue. Lifeguards cover the bathing area through the 2026 season, 13 June to 19 September, and that is beach supervision rather than a boat for kiters.

Launch

Medium sandy beach roughly 1.6 km long, south of Sines, with parking by the mouth of the Ribeira da Junqueira, food and toilets. Kiters use the centre-to-mid section, where the bottom is consistent. The north end is the industrial one: shale rock and the concrete piers that draw and return cooling water for the old power station.Stay out of the guarded bathing area and clear of the piers.

Rules & access
2026: São Torpes is a Blue Flag bathing beach from 13/06/2026 to 19/09/2026, beach code PTCX3M, municipality of Sines, inside the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina. The Portuguese beach edital keeps kitesurf out of the areas reserved for bathers, the same as surf and windsurf, and holds nautical craft to the defined channels or marked areas where those exist. No São Torpes-specific kite corridor or posted launch zone was found in the Blue Flag record or the edital.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Walk the north end first; the mole and the rocks are the two things that will hurt you.
  • Mid to high tide covers more of the rocks, but check on site because the tide advice contradicts itself.
  • Plan the session for the afternoon Nortada, roughly 13:00-18:00, and do not wait around for morning wind.
  • Stay out of the guarded bathing area in the 2026 season.
  • Bring your own kite gear; the school on this beach is surf only.
  • Rig in the centre-to-mid section of the beach. That is where the bottom is consistent and where the rock is not.
  • Walk the north end first; the concrete piers and the shale are the two things that will hurt you.
  • Mid to high tide covers most of the rock. Low tide uncovers it, mostly up by the pier.
  • Stay out of the guarded bathing area between 13 June and 19 September 2026.
  • The warmer water sits at the north end between the cooling-water breakwaters, not along the whole beach.
