The spot

Vila Nova de Milfontes rides at the mouth of the Rio Mira, on Portugal's Alentejo and Costa Vicentina coast, and it is a specialist's spot rather than an easy week. You get shallow, flatter water inside the river mouth and small-to-medium Atlantic waves outside, and which of the two you get depends on the beach side, the tide, and where the sandbanks have moved.

Seasons and wind

The wind that matters is the summer Nortada out of the north quadrant, best from May to September. The coast faces west, so the same northerly can go offshore or fall apart on you; that is the part nobody mentions.

Rules and skill

The beaches beside the river sit inside the 2026 bathing season, and the national beach edital keeps kites out of the swimmer areas. Intermediate and up, unless a local school or a rider on the sand tells you the day is safe for a beginner.

2026: beach access is public and free, with no kite permit, fee or registration.

The Portuguese beach edital bans surf, kitesurf, windsurf and similar activities inside areas reserved for bathers, and Farol, Furnas Mar and Furnas Rio run a 30 May-30 September 2026 bathing season, so stay outside the marked swimmer zones and follow the posted instructions.

No marked kite corridor was found, and nothing is actively enforced for kiters beyond the bathing-area rule.
