Rio's four spots span lagoon and ocean: Praia Seca on Lagoa de Araruama has the region's best-documented beginner water, shallow and sandy-bottomed, while K08 at Barra da Tijuca has run ocean-beach teaching at Praia do Pepe since 2001 on the summer NE/E sea breeze.

Búzios adds Manguinhos, reliable July to January with 15 to 25 knot NE wind, and Cabo Frio's Praia do Foguete, where Lagoinha do Foguete is a small dedicated learning cove.

A 2021 bill, PL 09/2021, would allow informal beach sports along Manguinhos except on the stretch from Porto da Barra to the Pier de Manguinhos, and outside designated zones would bar them 08:00-17:00 from December to March and 09:00-15:00 the rest of the year.
