Praia Seca is the south shore of Lagoa de Araruama, about 3 hours by bus from Rio, and it is where the Rio crowd learns: the lagoon is shallow enough to stand in for most of a lesson, the bottom is sand and there is no tide to think about.
Water is flat close to the bank and choppy further out. The wind is a NE/ENE sea breeze that builds in the afternoon from September to March, strongest November to February, with S/SW fronts filling the gaps in winter; the year-round numbers are 11-18 kt average and 20-24 days a month above 11 kt, which works out at about a 13 m kite for a 75 kg rider on a 14-16 kt day.
The lagoon is hypersaline and it stings; rinse your eyes. Launches belong to the school bases (Wind Hunter, AKS, Upwind, Frank Kitesurf, Araruama Kitesurf), on small grass and sand patches with trees close behind, so ask before you rig on your own. Which base lets independent riders in, and whether anyone would come and get you, is unconfirmed.
Christmas, New Year and Carnival are the busy weeks.

12-18 kt is the comfortable learning range; the annual figures are 11-18 kt average and 20-24 windy days a month above 11 kt.

Reliable in season: NE/ENE sea breeze with a thermal push in the warm months, S/SW fronts in winter.
Season September to March, strongest November to February. Another count starts it in August and ends it in February, and one listing calls it an all-year spot with no windy season at all; the September to March window is the better supported one.

Also on record

11-18 kt on the annual average; in-season forecasts usually sit in the mid-teens to low 20s.

The quiver, in words

About 13 m for a 75 kg rider in 14-16 kt; no fuller quiver guide exists for the spot.

Direction to shore

Depends on which bank you launch from: N/NE and SW come in side-on at some points around Lagoa de Araruama and side-off at others.

Dominant direction

NE/ENE in the warm season; S/SW with cold fronts.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

lagoon

Standing depth

Yes; learners can stand for most of a session. Choppy when the wind is up.

Tides

None; the lagoon does not move with the tide, at Praia Seca or at Arubinha.

Temperature

25°C summer

Wetsuit

Boardshorts/rash vest most of the year; a shorty can be useful from June to September.

Currents

No current data exists for the riding area.

22–26°C water
Shallow lagoon water on the south shore of Lagoa de Araruama, flat by the bank and choppy further out, sand underfoot. It is hypersaline, saltier than the sea; the ocean beaches of the Praia Seca district are a separate thing and not the kite spot.

Hazards riders report 9

  • gusts
  • shallow areas
  • shared lagoon use
  • Gusts and frontal wind shifts
  • Very shallow water in places
  • Trees near some grass/sand rigging areas
  • Shared lagoon use and recreational boats/jetskis around Lagoa de Araruama
  • Hypersaline lagoon water can irritate eyes/skin for some riders
  • Praia Seca is inside an APA: the restinga scrub is protected, so stay off it and off the informal tracks.
Rules & access
2026: no municipal or state rule specific to kitesurfing on the Praia Seca shore of Lagoa de Araruama was found, and the Araruama municipal site carries nothing on the sport. What does apply is the protected area: Praia Seca sits entirely inside the APA de Massambaba, so the restinga vegetation is protected, and you stay on the existing tracks rather than making new ones across the scrub. The lagoon launches are school ground rather than public beach, so ask before rigging.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Book a first session at one of the bases on the lagoon; the water is standing depth but the launches are small and there are trees right behind them.
  • Come between September and March for the NE/ENE breeze and ride the afternoon, when the thermal is up.
  • Hypersaline lagoon: bring fresh water to rinse eyes and skin after the session.
  • Ask which way the bank faces before you pump up; the same NE can be side-on at one base and side-off at the next.
  • Stay on the tracks and off the restinga scrub; Praia Seca is inside an APA and the vegetation is protected.
  • Pack a shorty for June to September; boardshorts do the rest of the year.
  • Cold fronts bring S/SW wind and gusts; that is not the day for a first lesson.
