A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. What it holds here is the month's average wind, month by month; it does not count how many days carry a three-hour window at 12 kt.

Good to know before you go3
- Praia do Bessa has minimal infrastructure — small vendor stalls, no public restrooms (though showers exist) — pack accordingly.
- Getting to Lucena means catching the Cabedelo ferry (roughly hourly, ~5am–7pm) or taking a longer inland detour — check the schedule before planning a day around it.
- A documented multi-kiter drift/rescue incident off Lucena is a real caution about currents and self-rescue readiness there, not just a generic warning.
The spots
Praia do Bessa
Praia do Bessa is a 5.3 km city beach in northern João Pessoa: green water, reef, coconut trees, bathers.

The model here carries the month's average wind rather than a count of windy days: it reaches 13.1 kt in July, the strongest month it models for this spot.

The kite point is the stretch in front of Bar dos Golfinhos, where lessons were running in 2014; whether anyone still teaches there is unconfirmed, so ask before you rig. The wind is the weak point. João Pessoa blows E most of the year and is windier from late May into January, but the area average sits around 10.8-11.7 kt from June-November, and the forecasts for Bessa Beach show 9-13 kt windows more often than proper trade-wind days. Best months for Bessa itself: unknown. The reef gives shallow flat water at the right tide, and Caribessa is the calm reef-protected corner the kayaks and SUPs use. Treat it as a light-wind, supervised city session shared with swimmers, not a beginner beach you turn up to alone. Bring your biggest kite and check the balneability report; there is urban drainage along this coast.

City-beach launch in front of Bar dos Golfinhos (Golfinho Bar), where the lessons run.
If it goes wrong
No kite rescue and no support boat. The Paraiba military fire brigade posts guarda-vidas along the Joao Pessoa beaches, including numbered observation posts on the Bessa stretch, and 193 is the emergency number. They are watching swimmers, and they are the reason this beach is worth treating as a shared one rather than a launch of your own.
Room to rig
shared urban beach with tourists, bathers and bars; launch space not formally mapped
Rules and access
2026: Joao Pessoa publishes no kite rules, lifeguard restrictions or designated launch area for Praia do Bessa. What exists on the ground is a family swimming beach with fire-brigade guarda-vidas posts along it, so until an ordinance appears the posts and the regulars are the rule.
Ponta de Lucena
Ponta de Lucena is the point about 1 km before Lucena on Paraíba's north coast, and the reason it gets ridden is its shape: a point takes almost any wind direction, so you walk to the side where the wind comes onshore or side-on and rig there.

Ponta de Lucena: the long version, the launch and the rules
More on Ponta de Lucena
The water is shallow over big areas, flat close in and choppy further out. Best months are July to December. Nobody has published a proper wind statistic for the point itself; the Joao Pessoa area averages only 10.8-11.7 kt from June to November, mostly east, with south dominant from 9 July to 16 August, so plan on big kites and light-wind gear. The beach is big and sandy, with room to rig and parking. Water is 26-29 C, shorts all year. There is no permanent rescue: on 25 June 2026 kitesurfers adrift off Lucena were picked up by a firefighters' boat with helicopter support, and that is the story to keep in mind before you ride out past the shallows on the side-off side of the point. Whether Ponta de Lucena Kiteschool is still operating, and where it launches, is unconfirmed.

Sandy launch on the point at Lucena: a big beach with plenty of room to rig, and parking.
If it goes wrong
No permanent rescue service. On 25 June 2026 kitesurfers adrift off Lucena were brought in by a firefighters' boat with helicopter support.
Rules and access
No local rules on record as of 2026, but that comes from a rider-contributed listing; ask the lifeguards or the municipality before you assume there are none.
