Ponta de Lucena is the point about 1 km before Lucena on Paraíba's north coast, and the reason it gets ridden is its shape: a point takes almost any wind direction, so you walk to the side where the wind comes onshore or side-on and rig there.
The water is shallow over big areas, flat close in and choppy further out. Best months are July to December.
Nobody has published a proper wind statistic for the point itself; the Joao Pessoa area averages only 10.8-11.7 kt from June to November, mostly east, with south dominant from 9 July to 16 August, so plan on big kites and light-wind gear. The beach is big and sandy, with room to rig and parking.
Water is 26-29 C, shorts all year. There is no permanent rescue: on 25 June 2026 kitesurfers adrift off Lucena were picked up by a firefighters' boat with helicopter support, and that is the story to keep in mind before you ride out past the shallows on the side-off side of the point.
Whether Ponta de Lucena Kiteschool is still operating, and where it launches, is unconfirmed.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

27–30°C water
Shallow water over big areas, flat inside and choppy further out, with nothing in the water to hit. The sea off Lucena is calm by beach standards; that is a swimmer's description, not a kiter's.

Listed for beginners through expert, and the shallows make that plausible. Beginners should still go with someone local: in 2026 kiters drifted off Lucena and had to be rescued.

Hazards riders report 5

  • offshore drift risk if riding far from shore
  • offshore or side-off drift risk depending on launch side and wind direction
  • big shallow areas
  • remote sections with uncertain rescue coverage
  • tide range around nearby Cabedelo tide station
Rules & access
No local rules on record as of 2026, but that comes from a rider-contributed listing; ask the lifeguards or the municipality before you assume there are none.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Walk the point before rigging and pick the side where the wind comes onshore or side-on; the other side is side-off, and that is where the drifting happens.
  • Do not go out past the shallows alone: agree a plan with someone on the beach, carry a phone or radio, and know that the only rescue on record is a firefighters' boat.
  • Read the tide off the Cabedelo table, 8 km SSE, then check the actual depth over the shallows on foot before your first run.
  • Take the Rio Paraiba ferry at Cabedelo; the point is about 1 km before Lucena on the road in.
  • Sleep in Lucena if a simple pousada by the beach is enough; Joao Pessoa and Cabedelo have the hotels.

FAQ

When is the best time to kitesurf at Ponta de Lucena?

The best winds are found from July through December.
