trade winds

11:00

The trade wind on the east Ceará coast typically fills from about 11:00 and then holds for hours, almost every day through the July to October core. No Uruaú-only onset measurement exists.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Uruaú is a fishing village in Beberibe, 120 km southeast of Fortaleza, with a small freshwater lagoon on one side of the sand and the open Atlantic on the other. The lagoon is flat, sandy-bottomed and calm; it is where you learn and where you try your first freestyle move, and it is full after a handful of kites.
The sea has room. What it does with the tide is not agreed: medium waves at high tide and flat water at low, or chop at low tide with the waves breaking further out and ramps at high, so go and look.
The alísios blow July to December, 12-25 kt on average, NE/E and side-onshore, and consistent wind reportedly runs into January; a SE wind is side-offshore here. On the ocean side watch for rocks and oyster beds in the shallows and for fishing boats.
The village has pousadas, restaurants and a couple of schools and camps, and it stays quieter than the Fortaleza/Cumbuco run.

The quiver, in words

No local quiver table is published. The season band on this stretch of coast runs about 25-60 km/h, roughly 13-32 kt, and a 75-85 kg rider covers that with three kites: a 12 m for light mornings and the July and January shoulders, a 9 m for the standard afternoon, a 7 m for the strongest August to October days. Indicative from the wind range, not a measured local average.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2020-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

flat freshwater lagoon plus choppy ocean with medium waves

Standing depth

The lagoon is shallow and sand-bottomed, with areas you can stand in, and it gets choppier the further out from the shore you go. No measured depth has been published. The lagoon also shrinks through the dry season, so how much standable water you get depends on the year and the month.

Tides

The lagoon does not depend on the tide. The sea side does, and the descriptions disagree on which way it goes: medium waves at high tide and flat water at low, or chop at low with the waves breaking further out and ramps at high. The ocean-side range is large, so the beach you land on is not the beach you launched from.

Temperature

28°C summer · 27°C winter

Wetsuit

Boardshorts or a lycra; the water sits at 27-28 C all year.

The lagoon, calm and sandy-bottomed, is for learning and first freestyle attempts. The open sea is for independent riders, strapless and wave practice and downwinders; treat it as a different spot from the lagoon because of chop, tide and hidden rocks.

Rescue

No public rescue service and no lifeguard, on the lagoon or on the beach. Water assistance during lessons is not confirmed for any operator actually based at Uruaú; the school most often associated with courses here runs from Ilha do Guajirú, on the coast west of Fortaleza.
Ride with someone, and plan a self-rescue and a walk back before you go out on the ocean side.

Sandy beach/lagoon-side launch by the village, with Pro Kite Brasil and other local guesthouse/school infrastructure close to the water.

Hazards riders report 6

  • hidden rocks and oyster beds offshore in the ocean section
  • Small areas with rocks and oysters.
  • Fishing boats and fishing activity.
  • Large tide variation on the ocean side.
  • Lagoon can become too small for comfortable riding once several kites are on the water.
  • SE wind is side-offshore.
Rules & access
  • 2026: no kitesurf permit, zone, hours restriction or seasonal ban is published for Uruaú, the lagoon or the beach, and access to both is open. Nothing in the Beberibe municipal legislation index could be checked for a lagoon-specific rule, so ask in the village before you rig on the lagoon and keep clear of the fishing boats working the same water.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Learn on the lagoon, then cross to the sea only once you can stay upwind in chop and handle the tide swing.
  • Check the shallows on the ocean side for rocks and oyster beds before you ride them hard or walk them barefoot.
  • Count the kites on the lagoon: past a handful it is too small, so move to the beach or set up a downwinder to Barra Nova or Parajuru with the school's support.
  • Give the fishing boats room; they work the same water.
