When it fills in

In summer the wind follows the Etesian clock: it builds through the middle of the day, is strongest in the afternoon and usually falls away overnight. Autumn and winter wind is frontal, so it can blow at any hour and often runs through the night. Regional pattern, no local measurement.

Ayia Napa is a resort town first and a kite spot second. The riding is at Makronissos Beach, west of the main strip on the southeast coast of Cyprus: you rig on the sand there and get more wind and bigger waves than at Nissi Beach nearby, which is shallow, has small waves and is where beginners end up.
Kites are not welcome on the bathing beaches, and from June through August the town's 27 beaches (14 of them Blue Flag) are packed with swimmers, so Makronissos rather than Nissi is the working rule. The wind is gusty.
When it blows best is unsettled: the usual claim is steady wind April to October, but the wind-station record counts more windy days from November to March, so read a live forecast before you plan a trip around either. Speed, direction to shore and kite sizes are all unrecorded for now. The water is clear.
Larnaca (LCA) is the airport, and a no-wind day means the underwater sculpture museum, the artificial reef or the nightlife.

Peak timing is unsettled. The Etesian season runs mid-May to mid-September and reaches Cyprus as a west to south-west wind, which is where the usual April-October claim comes from.
The station record disagrees flatly: 73 windy days a year, of which almost none fall in summer -- 0 to 1 windy day a month from June to September against 13 or 14 in January and February. Read a live forecast before you plan a trip around either calendar.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2020-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

Standing depth

Nissi Beach is shallow and calm; Makronissos Beach, where kiting actually happens, has deeper water further out and small-to-medium waves

Tides

Effectively none. The nearest published gauge, at Larnaca about 40 km west on the same coast, swings between roughly 0.18 m and 0.36 m from low to high water across a spring cycle, and low water sits at or just under 0.0 m. The tide uncovers no beach and changes nothing about the launch.Indicative: no gauge is published for Ayia Napa itself.

Temperature

Summer 24-29 (peaks around 28-29 in August)

Winter 17-20 (coldest in February)

Wetsuit

Not needed roughly June-October; a 3/2mm or shorty is worth having November-April when the sea sits around 17-20C

18–30°C water
Open, exposed south-coast sea water, not a lagoon. Makronissos Beach is described by aggregator data as sand with waves ranging none-to-small and choppy.

Nissi Beach: shallow, small waves, beginner-friendly, but kiting itself is not really practiced there (see hazards/rules). Makronissos Beach: stronger wind and bigger waves, suits intermediate/advanced riders.

Rescue

Nothing confirmed at the launch. No lifeguard post, patrol boat or kite-specific rescue has been found for Makronissos and no local number is published. Organised beaches in the Ayia Napa area are staffed with lifeguards and first-aid equipment from April to October, but that cover is pointed at the bathing zones, not at a kiter drifting downwind.
Ride with someone on the sand who can raise the alarm.

Launch

Rig on the sand at Makronissos Beach, a short drive west of central Ayia Napa. No source described a specific designated kite-launch zone, on-site rescue service, or kite-rental operator physically based at Makronissos.

Hazards riders report 5

  • Crowded summer swimming beaches - kiting is not welcome on the main tourist bathing beaches
  • Confirm current local permit/zoning rules before rigging, as some public beaches restrict kiting
  • Crowded summer swimming beaches -- kiting is not welcome on the main tourist bathing beaches such as Nissi
  • No dated, official kite-zoning or permit rule was found for Ayia Napa/Famagusta -- confirm current local rules before rigging
  • No confirmed rescue/patrol service at Makronissos
Rules & access
  • Kite from the designated spots, not the main swimming beaches: Makronissos, not Nissi.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Rig at Makronissos, on the sand west of the main strip; leave Nissi and the other bathing beaches to the swimmers, especially June through August.
  • Take beginners to Nissi Beach on the lighter days: shallow water and small waves. Go to Makronissos when you want stronger wind and waves.
  • Ask about the current designated kite zone before you rig; some public beaches restrict kiting and the rule is not published anywhere.
  • Check a live forecast rather than trusting the April-October season: the station record shows more windy days from November to March.
