The spot

Bol is a real kitesurfing destination and a complicated one, because Zlatni Rat is not a beach you can simply launch from.

The draw

The draw is the afternoon Maestral, accelerated through the Brač-Hvar channel, commonly quoted around 15-25 kt and sometimes stronger. The sea is clear, deep Adriatic, the beaches are pebble, and depending on the wind angle you get flat pockets around the cape and chop or waves on the windward side.

Summer access

In July and August the tip of Zlatni Rat is a swimming beach first, so launching and landing are routed through the kite centres instead. Lessons run from a boat or a sea platform, because shore space and standing-depth training water are both short here.

Best for

Intermediate and advanced riders get the most from the spot. A first-timer should be with a school and should not self-launch.

Flexibility

Bol also works as a mixed holiday base, with enough to do on the days the thermal never arrives.

Reliable summer thermal when the weather pattern supports the Maestral, accelerated through the Brač-Hvar channel by a Venturi effect; launch access and shore angle are the bigger limitations than wind strength.

The wind-sports season runs May to October. The Maestral is a thermal: it starts around 13:00-14:00 and builds through the afternoon, which is why mornings are used for lessons and afternoons for experienced riders.

Wind frequency and data

Over 15 knots is reached on roughly 80% of days from June on and about 50% of days at the start of May, and the channel between Brač and Hvar accelerates the flow. Bura and Jugo days are also ridden but are a different, harder proposition.

The kite centre on Put Zlatnog Rata teaches only from a boat, hands beginners their kite in the water as a free start service and keeps a rescue boat for riders who are not yet solid upwind; the Camp Aloa centre about 2 km west also runs all its lessons from a speedboat. Neither is a public service: independent riders in trouble at sea use 195 for maritime search and rescue or 112.

Summer restrictions

In July and August launching and landing on Zlatni Rat itself is not allowed; the only launch is the kite centre on Put Zlatnog Rata, which took over the beach concession and enlarged the kite beach by about 30% in 2023, and which charged about EUR 15 per day for launch and landing in 2024.

Off-season access

Riding the water around the cape stays allowed all season, and outside the main season the whole beach is open for sports launches.

Beach rules

The official beach rules (2026) ask visitors not to surf on the beach and to keep water games and sports away from other swimmers; the boat rules ban anchoring anywhere in the beach's waters, with penalties for unauthorised anchoring closer than about 500 m.

Sailing and swimming boundaries

Croatian port-order rules in force since 2005 also forbid sailing a board at port entrances, in narrow passages used by shipping and inside the marked water of an organised beach, and they keep swimmers inside that marked area or within 100 m of the shore on a natural beach - which in practice is the boundary to stay outside of when the cape is full of bathers.

Most riders fly to Split, cross to Brač and drive south to Bol.Ferry optionsFrom Split the car ferry to Supetar takes just over an hour and runs about 9 times a day out of season and about 14 times a day in July and August, then it is a road transfer across the island; a seasonal fast catamaran runs from Split straight to Bol. From Makarska the car ferry to Sumartin takes 60 minutes with 3 sailings a day off season and 4-5 in summer.To Zlatni RatBrač's own airport is 15 km from Bol but has limited seasonal traffic. Zlatni Rat is about 2 km west of Bol town, reachable on foot along the promenade, by tourist train, taxi boat or road.
