Okrug Gornji is the beach on Čiovo island across the bridge from Trogir, and as a kite spot it is marginal. The water is fine: flat to choppy Adriatic, clear, with a shallow entry off pebble and fine shingle. The problem is everything else.
The beach is the Toć/Copacabana waterfront; bars and sunbeds line it, jet skis and parasailing work off it, and there is very little room to lay out lines, less again in July and August when every metre of shingle is taken.
The wind is the summer NW Maestral, which here is usually below 10 kt, and from the southwest-facing beach the direction can end up side-off, so a light day can also be a long swim back. Intermediate or better, quiet hours only, and only after you have looked at the beach with your own eyes.
Split Airport is about 8 km away and Trogir's old town covers the no-wind days, which is the honest case for staying here. For wind, Bol, Viganj or the Neretva delta are where Croatian riders go.

fills in: Afternoon, as with the Maestral anywhere in Croatia; no exact onset hour is confirmed for this beach.

Typical strength

Light. Usual strength is below 10 kt, monthly averages run 4-8 kt and the year-round average is 5.7 kt. The regional summer Maestral is about 10-20 kt, but nothing confirms that as typical at Okrug Gornji.

light and unreliable; can be gusty or awkward when offshore/side-offshore
May-September is the usable window, on the summer Maestral. The raw wind-day tables show more 12+ kt days in winter and spring than in midsummer, but they leave out thermal wind. Bura/Bora is a cold, gusty NE wind, and on a southwest-facing beach it is not the wind to plan around.

The quiver, in words

Indicative and mostly academic, since the usual wind here is under 10 kt: a 75-85 kg rider needs a foil or a 15-17 m to move at all on an average day. A proper NW Maestral afternoon in the 12-18 kt band is 12 m weather.A 9 m only comes out on a Bura or Jugo day, and on those days the cramped launch and the wind angle are the reason to stay on the beach.

Direction to shore

Southwest-facing beach. NW to W arrives side-on to side-shore and is the direction to want here. Swing the wind further north or northeast and it goes cross-off, with a long swim back down a bay full of boats.Which of the two you get depends on where along the two kilometres of Toć you set up.

Dominant direction

NW on the summer Maestral, with NE Bura/Bora and SE Jugo on synoptic days; no reliable local statistics give a dominant annual direction.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2020-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

Standable close in off the pebble entry at both high and low water; how far out that holds has not been measured.

Tides

Not tide dependent; tide predictions exist for the spot, but no meaningful kitesurf impact is described.

Temperature

25°C summer · 13°C winter

Wetsuit

Shorts or a shorty in summer, a normal wetsuit in spring and autumn, a thick one in winter. The sea is about 24.6-25.0 C in July-August and about 13.2 C in February.

13–27°C water
Flat to choppy Adriatic. The beach is pebble and fine shingle, not sand; the water is clear and the entry shallow.

Your level

Intermediate and up. The launch is cramped, the water has swimmers and tourist craft in it, and the wind is light and can be side-off. One listing calls it a beginner spot; the launch alone rules that out.

Rescue

+385 21 88 73 11

Lifeguards on the beach are reportedly present and unconfirmed by anything official; cover for kiters is not established. The Okrug tourist board is the place to ask before you travel, on +385 21 88 73 11 or info@visitokrug.com. A dive centre operates from the beach, which puts boats in the bay but is not a rescue service.

Launch

Pebble and fine shingle on the Toć/Copacabana waterfront at Okrug Gornji, a beach running about two kilometres with a promenade behind it. The central section is bars, sunbeds and umbrellas with tourist watersports working off it, and there is little or no room to lay out lines there in summer.Any rigging space is at the quieter ends, and in July and August there may be none anywhere.

Hazards riders report 17

  • Bura can be strong and gusty on the island's northern side
  • Very limited launch and landing space on a busy beach
  • Crowded beach and crowded water in summer
  • Swimmers and non-kiters on the beach and in the water
  • Jet skis, parasailing, diving boats, boat rental and banana boats all work off the beach.
  • Side-offshore or cross-offshore wind risk depending on the exact launch position and wind direction
  • Light and inconsistent wind can make self-rescue or returning to shore difficult
  • Pebble/rocky shoreline and rocky points around the bay
  • Boat traffic in the bay
  • Bura/Bora can be strong, cold and gusty on exposed Adriatic coastlines
  • Very limited launch and landing space on a busy beach, and in July and August often none.
  • Swimmers and non-kiters on the beach and in the water.
  • Cross-offshore drift risk when the wind sits north of NW on this southwest-facing beach.
  • Light and inconsistent wind makes the swim back long if you go down.
  • Pebble and rocky shoreline with rocky points around the bay; water shoes help.
  • Boat traffic in the bay.
  • Bura can be strong, cold and gusty on exposed Adriatic coastlines and on the island's northern side.
Rules & access
No municipal kite zoning, permit requirement or seasonal ban is published for Okrug in 2026. Croatia's 2025 maritime-navigation rules keep vessels a set distance off the shore and off organised bathing areas and restrict planing and motorised craft close in; how a kiteboard is treated under them at Okrug Gornji is unconfirmed.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Walk the Toć/Copacabana beach before you pump up; in summer the shingle is sunbeds and umbrellas and there may be no room for lines.
  • July and August are the worst months for swimmers and jet-ski traffic; if you must, go early or late, outside beach hours.
  • Skip a marginal or offshore forecast; the usual wind here is below 10 kt and from the southwest-facing beach it can be side-off.
  • Do not assume the 10-20 kt Maestral of Bol or Viganj reaches Okrug Gornji; the local year-round average is 5.7 kt.
  • Ask on the beach whether kiting is tolerated in the bathing season and whether the lifeguards cover kiters; neither is on record for 2026.
  • Base yourself in Okrug or Trogir: Split Airport is about 8 km, Trogir is 5 minutes by bus or car, and the old town covers the no-wind days.
  • The Okrug tourist board, +385 21 88 73 11 or info@visitokrug.com, is the only public office that can tell you what is tolerated on Toć in season; there is no kite club to call.

FAQ

When is the best time to kitesurf at Okrug Gornji?

May to September is the main usable period, mostly tied to the summer NW Maestral; several sources describe the wind here as often light and unreliable.

Is Okrug Gornji suitable for beginners?

Most rider-level sources point to intermediate and expert use because of limited launch room, swimmers, tourist watercraft and light or side-offshore wind.

What is the wind like at Okrug Gornji?

Summer NW Maestral is the main pattern, but usual strength is often reported below 10 knots, so this is not a high-reliability wind spot.

Where do you launch and how crowded is it?

The launch is a pebble beach on the Toc/Copacabana waterfront with bars, sunbeds and tourist watersports; rigging, launch and landing space is described as very limited, especially in July and August.
