The spot

Viganj sits on the Pelješac peninsula just west of Orebić, across the channel from Korčula, and it has been a wind-sport village for a long time. The riding is at Ponta Liberan, also called Ponta Beach, where the narrow Pelješac Channel squeezes and accelerates the summer NW Maestral. The beach is pebble and fully developed: schools, rental, showers, bistros and a lot of people.

It is not a standing-depth learner lagoon. The main kite water is deep, which is why the local school teaches from a boat, although there is shallow water at the shore and flatter sections before the chop starts further out. The reliable season is roughly May to September, with June to August the core thermal window and July-August the busiest weeks.

Learning considerations

Beginners do fine here with a school; independent beginners should look hard at the tight beach, the swimmers, the windsurfers and the boat traffic before they lay lines out.

Boat support comes from the schools, not from a public service.

The kiteboarding school teaches only from a boat because the water is deep - maximum two students per boat, radio helmets, theory on the beach first - and is open daily 09:00-19:00 from May to the end of September.

The neighbouring watersports centre lists only windsurf, wingfoil and SUP in 2026.

No municipal or beach rescue cover for kiters was found.

The launch and riding area is Ponta Liberan / Ponta Beach at Viganj, spilling into neighbouring Kuciste, on the narrowest part of the Peljesac Channel facing Korcula.It is the beach where windsurfers and kiters gather: pebble, with changing room, shower, schools, rental, parking and bistros right there. The kite school sits by the main beach across from St Liberan church; the windsurf and wingfoil centre is at Kuciste 86.You are sharing a developed beach with swimmers, windsurfers and boats, so space to lay lines out is the constraint, not water.

What applies in practice is the Croatian beach zone system: the red zone is for bathers, with kiting, launching and landing banned inside it; the yellow zone belongs to the school while lessons are running; riders keep a safe distance from swimmers and from the shore.

Stay off the shore and away from swimmers. The crowded part of this spot is the beach, not the water.

A Bora is not a Maestral session, so stay on the sand when it turns NE; and if the launch feels too tight anyway, Kućište / Ponta Zamošće is the next beach along the same channel.

Dubrovnik Airport (DBV), about 105 km away; Split Airport (SPU) also works, via the Split-Korčula fast ferry.

Route

From Dubrovnik: bus service to Orebić, then taxi/arranged pickup about 7 km to Viganj. From Split: fast ferries to Korčula taking about 2h20-3h, followed by boat/taxi transfer across to Viganj. Viganj is also linked by road along Pelješac and by local boats/ferries around Korčula/Orebić.
