The Maestral window is roughly 12:00 to 17:00 and it normally fills in around 13:00. Mornings are calm or carry a light easterly or southerly, which is when schools run theory and boat sessions from about 10:00, and the channel drops away again in the evening.

The spot

Perna is a pebble beach at Camp Perna in Kućište, 3-4 km west of Orebić on the Pelješac Channel, and the wind is the Dalmatian Maestral/Mistral: a thermal NW-W flow that squeezes between Pelješac and Korčula, arrives around 12:00-13:00 on a summer day, 15-25 kt through the main season, with 10-40 kt quoted as the full seasonal spread.

Season and conditions

June to September is the strongest period; the wider Viganj area also works in May and September, and July and August are both the windiest and the most crowded months. The water is chop with the occasional small wave, not a lagoon; nobody has confirmed a standing-depth area at Perna itself.

Launch and riding

The launch is the problem. There is room to rig a windsurfer but not much for a kite, with trees and huts on the beach, sunbathers on the pebbles and windsurf gear everywhere, so this is not a beginner beach; the schools teach learners from boats or over at Viganj. Riding zones exist and some form of rescue is on the beach, but whether you need a permit or club membership to kite independently in 2026 is unconfirmed, so ask at the surf centre before you pump up. Outside the Maestral pattern the channel gets Bora from the NE and Jugo from the SE, and both change the day fast.

Whether you need permission, a permit or club membership to kite is something to check on the spot, since it changes. No municipal beach ordinance specific to Perna is published.

Still learning waterstarts or self-rescue: go out with a school boat, not from the Camp Perna beach.
Check the Viganj forecast alongside Perna; the channel between Pelješac and Korčula accelerates the wind, and open-Adriatic numbers undershoot it.
From late August, watch for Jugo from the SE and Bora from the NE; either can turn a Maestral day into something else quickly.
Ask at the surf centre which zone is for kites this season and where the swimmers are; the zones move, and no municipal ordinance fixes them.
Camp Perna sits 3-4 km from Orebić in Kućište with the surf centre right on the beach; Split is about a three-hour drive, Dubrovnik about 135 km.

Airport

Dubrovnik (DBV) and Split (SPU) are the main practical airports; Dubrovnik is about 135 km and Split about 120 km from Perna, with Split also cited as about a three-hour drive to Viganj.

Route

Reach Orebić/Kućište by road from Dubrovnik or Split, then continue a few kilometres to Perna; alternatives include ferries/boats via Korčula and local taxi/transfer from Orebić. Camp Perna is listed in Kućište, around 3-4 km from Orebić.

Staying

Camp Perna offers pitches, plots, mobile homes and bungalows, with restaurant, shop, bar, sports fields and a surf center on the beach; Viganj/Kućište also have campsites, apartments and hostels close to the water.
