When it fills in

Tramuntana is a gradient wind with no daily rhythm to plan around. It arrives with the weather pattern, holds through the night and drops when the pattern moves on, so there is no afternoon fill-in and no evening shutdown. Indicative: this follows from the synoptic character of the wind rather than from local timing data.

Cala Tirant is the Menorca spot people name first, and on north Tramuntana days it is the one that works. It is a U-shaped bay facing north near Fornells, about 450 m across, split into two sections by a small hill, with reddish-gold sand and clear water. Tramuntana is onshore here and the waves grow as it strengthens.
That puts the spot with intermediate and advanced riders, nobody else. The bay is shallow enough that bathers walk almost 100 m out without swimming, though that is beach information and not a promise about where you can stand in a shorebreak. October to April is the working season, and the summer Tramuntana is usually softer.
In high season a kitesurfer zone is marked out, with more room than Son Bou has, but entry and exit are restricted while the bathers are in. Bring everything you need: Menorca has no confirmed kite school or rental, which also means nothing resembling kite rescue outside the summer lifeguard service.

Tramuntana-driven. More frequent in winter and spring; the summer version is usually less intense.

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Rescue

Beach surveillance in the bathing season is rated medium, with Red Cross assistance called in when needed. Nothing is kite-specific and no rescue boat covers riders. Menorca has no kite school or rental to call either, so from October to April, which is the season you come for, the bay is unwatched and 112 is the only number.

Launch

Sandy natural beach in a U-shaped bay facing north, split by a low hill into two sections: the right-hand one is smaller and more sheltered, the left-hand one is bigger and takes the swell. Riders rig and launch from the west side, or walk across from the Platges de Fornells side. The sand is clean to rig on and there are no hidden rocks at the launch. A kitesurfer area is marked out in high season, with more room than Son Bou, though entry and exit stay restricted while the bathers are in.

Rules & access
2026: Cala Tirant reportedly has a designated zone for kitesurfers even in high season, with summer entry and exit restricted because of bathers. No official 2026 municipal ordinance text is published.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Only ride if you can launch and come back in onshore Tramuntana with waves behind you.
  • Use the marked kiter area in high season and read the beach signage before rigging.
  • Bring spares: Menorca has no confirmed kite lessons or rental, so a broken line ends the trip.
  • Watch the rocks at the ends of the bay; on a big day the risk is being pushed onto them, not what sits under the launch.
  • If it is too onshore or too rough, look at Son Bou or the Bahia de Fornells instead.
  • Rig on the west side of the bay, or walk across from the Platges de Fornells side.
  • The shorebreak is heaviest right at the sand and the water is flatter once you are out, but on a big day the sets break outside as well.
  • Nothing on this beach is watching kiters. In season the surveillance is a general beach service; out of season there is none.

Getting there

Airport

Menorca Airport (MAH)

Route

By car from Mahon toward Fornells, then a signposted road of about 2 km down to Cala Tirant, with a short walk from the parking. The bay can be entered from either side; the right-hand access is the developed one, planted with cacti and exotic species.

Staying

Stay in Fornells, at Platges de Fornells and Cala Tirant, or anywhere else on Menorca. No kite-specific lodging is confirmed.

No-wind days

Wingfoil, SUP and other activities out of Fornells, hiking the Cami de Cavalls, and the usual Menorca beaches and towns.

FAQ

When is the best time to kite at Cala Tirant?

The season runs October to April, when the northerly Tramuntana blows most often; a weaker version can occur in summer.

Is Cala Tirant suitable for beginners?

No, it is rated for intermediate and advanced riders because the Tramuntana is onshore, can build waves, and the beach is small.

What is the wind like at Cala Tirant?

It works on northerly Tramuntana (N, NNE, NNW), which is onshore here and builds wave height as it strengthens.

Are there kite schools or rental at Cala Tirant?

No verified kitesurf schools or rental centers operate on Menorca, so riders should bring their own gear.

Is there a designated kiter zone?

Yes, a designated kiter area is set up in high season, though summer entry and exit are still restricted by bathers.
