When it fills in
There is no daily cycle to time. The wind is synoptic: it arrives with the system, blows through the night, and dies when the system moves on. Check the pressure chart two or three days out rather than waiting for an afternoon fill.

fills in: There is no daily cycle to time. The wind is synoptic: it arrives with the system, blows through the night, and dies when the system moves on. Check the pressure chart two or three days out rather than waiting for an afternoon fill.
Typical strength
No measured range has ever been published for the beach. The nearest long-run coastal record, the buoy off Mao 11 km north, averages 9 knots across the year with a northerly bias, which is well under riding strength, so an ordinary day here is a no-wind day. The sessions come when a Mistral or Tramuntana system is passing and the gradient is up in the 20s (regional figure, no local measurement).
The quiver, in words
No local figures are published. The reef setup arrives on the back of a Mistral or Tramuntana, which makes it a small-kite day: a 75-85 kg rider should expect to be on 7-9 m, with 10-12 m only on the dying tail of a system.Rig one size down from what the forecast suggests, because the wind is gustier inshore than offshore (indicative, derived from the weather pattern rather than measured here).
Direction to shore
NE comes in slightly gusty and cross-offshore at the reef. SW is usable and ordinary.
Dominant direction
NE for the main reef-wave setup; SW also works but is described as ordinary chop or rolling swell.

modelled
A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.
Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth
The tourist beach is shallow. Standing depth over the reef where the waves break is unconfirmed.
Tides
Effectively tideless. Published predictions for Punta Prima swing between about -0.1 m and +0.1 m, so roughly 20 cm from the lowest to the highest water of a spring cycle. Nothing in the launch, the reef or the depth changes with the clock; wind and air pressure move the water level more than the tide does.
Temperature
24.8°C summer · 15.4°C winter
Wetsuit
Shorts in summer; shorty or normal suit in spring and autumn; full/normal wetsuit in winter.

Launch
Short sandy town beach, about 120 m long and 30 m wide, with rock sections closing both ends and a promenade, a large car park and a playground behind it. The water between the sand and Illa de l'Aire is shallow and partly screened by the islet. After a wave ride in the northeast setup you beat back upwind, which is the physical work of a session here.

Rider tips
- Take the NE reef setup only if you can beat back upwind after every wave; the wind is cross-offshore at the beach.
- Check live wind from the Punta Prima station before committing to the drive.
- In June, July and August, find clean separation from bathers or ride somewhere else.
- Rig between the rock sections and keep the lines off the rocks on both sides of the sand.
- Winter half-year sessions want a full suit; the water sits around 15.4 C.
- Nowhere on Menorca runs kite courses or rents kite gear, so bring everything, spares included.
- The island's three beaches with a marked kite launch zone are Son Bou, Cala Tirant and Fornells Bay. Punta Prima is not one of them, which is the argument for saving it for an empty winter day.

FAQ
Is it suitable for beginners?
No, the small beach, rocks and gusty cross-offshore wind make it unsuitable for beginners.
What is the wind like?
Northeast wind after Mistral or Tramuntana produces the main reef-wave setup; southwest wind gives more ordinary chop.
When is the best time?
May to October is the general best season, with the standout reef-wave conditions occurring in the winter half-year.
What hazards should I know about?
Reef and rocks border both sides of the short beach, and riders must beat back upwind after wave rides.
