Lac d'Orient - Mesnil-Saint-Pere has no other spot on this map within 40 km of it. straight-line distance

Lac d'Orient is a big managed reservoir in Aube, about 2,400-2,500 ha of it, and the main beach at Mesnil-Saint-Pere is the easy one of its five kite accesses: you rig anywhere between the club fence at Maison des Lacs and the lawn by Le Calypso. The wind is synoptic and inland, so it comes and goes.
Southwest and northeast are the directions that actually work; at high water northeast is about the only practical one, and only when the level drops do the west-to-northeast sectors open up. The lake is reserved for non-motorized sports, so there is no boat wash, but you share it with dinghies and paddlers.
Kite season runs from the first weekend of March to the third weekend of October, and the beach spots are closed to kites from June 15 to September 15 and on busy long weekends, which makes this a spring and autumn spot whatever the calendar suggests.
The beach signage calls the access 'facile', but you must ride upwind, and at low lake level there are trees along the edge waiting for a kite; treat it as an intermediate lake venue, not a first solo launch. Typical wind strength is unconfirmed; no usable average has been published.

Direction to shore

The main beach sits on the south shore and looks north up the lake. North-east arrives onshore, the west-to-north sectors come in cross-shore, and south-west blows straight off the beach and out across 2,400 ha of open water. Orientation taken from the map, not measured on site.

Dominant direction

Southwest and northeast are the productive directions once established. At low lake level the west to northeast sectors are usable; at high lake level northeast is about the only practical one.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

freshwater reservoir

Standing depth

The beach shelves gently, fine sand with a gradual entry that families use with small children, so you can wade out a fair way before it gets deep. Off the shelf there is no standing at all: the lake runs 5 to 25 m and the port basin alone is 3 m. No measured wading distance has been published.

Tides

No tides. What moves instead is the managed reservoir level, and it decides the day: below 129.50 m NGF the lake is not navigable at all, at high level the water swallows several of the accesses, and at low level tree stumps and branches appear along the edge.

Temperature

23°C summer

Currents

No tide current; wind-driven or outlet current at the kite launch is unconfirmed.

Lac d'Orient is an artificial lake of about 2,400-2,500 ha reserved for non-motorized water sports. Lake depth is 5 to 25 m; the port is 3 m deep.

Rescue

No kite-specific rescue on the lake. Lifeguards watch the swimming beach every day in July and August, which is precisely the window when kites are banned from that beach; the rest of the season nobody is covering the water.
The port office answers on +33 3 25 41 28 30 (port.mesnil@aube.fr) through the navigation season, and 112 is the emergency number. Work out your self-rescue and your downwind exit before you launch.

Rules & access
2026: in Aube only Lac d'Orient is open to kitesurf, and only when the water level is high enough — below 129.50 m NGF the lake is not navigable at all. Navigation runs from the first weekend of March to the third weekend of October, night navigation is banned year-round, and kite is reserved for initiated riders. The beach spots are closed to kites from June 15 to September 15 and on busy long weekends or high-affluence days, and an upwind return is expected from every access. Launching from the EPTB Seine Grands Lacs protection zones, dikes included, is forbidden at all times, as is entering the Réserve Naturelle Nationale de la Forêt d'Orient marked by yellow buoys. Thermal engines are prohibited on the lake. Navigation fees are paid at the Capitainerie; an FFVL licence plus Flysurf10 membership are recommended. Lac du Temple is closed to everything and Lac Amance is closed to sailing.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Check the lake level before you drive: at high water only northeast works, at low water watch the trees along the edge.
  • Pay the navigation fee at the Capitainerie at Maison des Lacs before you rig.
  • Do not plan a beach launch between June 15 and September 15, or on a busy long weekend; the beach spots are closed to kites then.
  • First time here, go out with Gliss'Orient or AWA; they know which of the five accesses is working at the current lake level.
  • An FFVL licence and Flysurf10 membership are recommended on this lake; carry both.
  • Check the lake level before you drive: at high water only northeast works, at low water watch the trees along the edge, and below 129.50 m NGF nobody goes on the water.
  • The beach is lifeguarded daily in July and August, exactly when kites are off it. Every other week of the season the water is unwatched.
  • South-west blows off this beach. If it is the direction of the day, expect a long walk or a different access.
