When it fills in

No dependable afternoon fill-in. The thermal that builds through the day at the Malaga beaches is much weaker here, so a session depends on the Poniente or levante being in place from the start of the day.

Los Monteros is the kite beach on the eastern side of Marbella, and it exists because the city council built it: roughly 300 linear metres set up with Marbella Kite Club, with signage, use rules, a rinse and drying area and a buoyed nautical channel.
Water is calmer and more sheltered than the Malaga-area alternatives, which is the reason to drive here rather than to Guadalmar. Wind reports do not agree.
SE and SSW are given as the best directions, SW as the usual one, and other reports have it working on Poniente and Levante; summer thermals run light, and Poniente reaches Los Monteros more gently than it hits Guadalmar.
The launch is small, the beach narrow and the entry is over stone with sea urchins reported on the rocks, so this is a lesson and local spot rather than somewhere to turn up with a quiver.
The part that decides a trip: the zone is reportedly not operated from 15 June to 15 September, because municipal bathing-season rules put swimmers first. January through October is the listed window, so plan around that closure and check the buoy layout before committing a day.

fills in: No dependable afternoon fill-in. The thermal that builds through the day at the Malaga beaches is much weaker here, so a session depends on the Poniente or levante being in place from the start of the day.

Typical strength

Light. The Poniente reaches this beach with less punch than the Malaga-side spots, and the afternoon thermal that lifts Torremolinos barely registers here. Coastal stations on this stretch average in the single digits over the year. Indicative, regional; there is no measurement at the kite zone.

Summer thermals are described as lighter; Poniente reaches Los Monteros more gently than Guadalmar.
January through October is the usable window. The zone is closed to kiting from 15 June to 15 September under bathing-season rules, and schools move lessons to Torremolinos or Rincon de la Victoria for those three months. Summer sessions here run on levante from the southeast; Poniente in winter brings the waves.

The quiver, in words

Big-kite ground for a 75-85 kg rider: a 12 m is the default and a 14-15 m earns its place on the soft Poniente days, with 9-10 m only when a levante gradient is properly on. Indicative, derived from the light-wind character of the spot rather than from local session reports.

Direction to shore

The beach faces roughly south. Poniente, the westerly, comes in side-shore and already softened by the coast west of Marbella. A levante from the southeast arrives side-onshore and is the one that flattens the water. Winds from the northern half come off the land.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

The entry is over stone rather than clean sand and the beach is narrow, so you are off the bottom quickly. No measured wading distance is documented.

Tides

Conditions do not hang on the tide. No official tide or depth note exists for the kite zone.

Wetsuit

Shorty or shorts in summer; long wetsuit in winter; shorty in shoulder seasons.

Mediterranean water, usually calm and sheltered behind the Marbella coast, though chop and small waves also get reported.

Rescue

Nothing organised. The municipal fit-out of the zone runs to signage, use rules, a rinse and drying area and the buoyed channel, with no safety boat and no kite-specific lifeguard cover listed, so ride with somebody rather than alone.

Launch

About 300 linear metres of Playa de Los Monteros fitted out by the city council as a kite and wing zone: signage carrying the use rules, a rinse and drying area for gear, and a buoyed nautical channel that is the way in and out.The strip is narrow, the entry is over stone, and you are expected to leave from the upwind end so you do not drift down onto the swimming area. The Pal Beach restaurant is the landmark to aim for.

Rules & access
2026: Playa de los Monteros carries a signed and buoyed kite and wing zone of about 300 linear metres, set up by Marbella city council with the local kite club, with the rules of use posted on site and a buoyed nautical channel serving as the entry and exit. Kiting is reportedly closed there from 15 June to 15 September, when bathing-season rules put swimmers first and schools relocate lessons to Torremolinos or Rincon de la Victoria. Outside that window there is no permit to buy: use the channel, launch from the upwind end, keep clear of the swimming area.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Confirm the buoy layout and whether the zone is open before planning anything between 15 June and 15 September.
  • Ask the club where to walk in; the entry is stone and urchins are reported on the rocks.
  • Treat the light summer thermal as marginal unless the local forecast shows enough wind.
  • Come east of Marbella on the A-7/AP-7 or N-340 and drop in on Avenida del Gaviero, where the parking sits near the beach.
  • Shorty or shorts in summer, long wetsuit in winter.
  • If your dates fall inside the summer closure, plan on Torremolinos or Rincon de la Victoria: that is where the Marbella schools go.
  • Launch from the upwind end of the strip so a drift takes you along the zone and not into the swimmers.
