Matalascañas is an open Atlantic beach on the edge of Doñana, in Huelva. W-SW Poniente is the predominant wind and the cleanest, at its best in spring and summer when the thermal helps it along, and this is also one of the few Huelva beaches where NW works, as long as the direction is not too northerly.
The water is choppy with small waves and the beach is long enough to find room away from the bathing crowd. Summer is where it gets complicated: you enter and exit through marked nautical channels, and any kite zone toward the old campsite/Mazagón side depends on that year's municipal grant.
No current official Almonte map has been found, so ask locally before you rig. The town is a summer resort and fills from June to September. Skip it for a first week of kiting: open ocean, summer bathers, and access rules that move each year.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Rules & access
2026: summer kiting is legal only by entering and exiting through properly marked nautical channels, and some seasons may have kite zones toward the old campsite/Mazagón side depending on that year's municipal grant; a current official Almonte kite-zone map was not found.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Check the marked nautical channels and the current municipal grant before rigging; last season's kite zone tells you nothing.
  • On NW days, read the angle from the beach first, it only works when it is not too northerly.
  • Walk away from the dense bathing stretch in June, July and August and enter only through legal channels.
  • Pack a shorty for summer water near 24.1 C and a long suit for winter near 14.5 C, with something in between for spring and autumn.

Summer kiting is legal only through marked nautical channels, and some years add a kite zone toward the old campsite side depending on that year's municipal grant.
