El Portil runs along a sandbar system near the Rio Piedras and the Flecha de El Rompido, west of Huelva, and the sandbar is the whole point. Behind it sit shallow flat-water lagoons and corridors, reportedly very safe; on the ocean side of the bar the waves break.
Poniente out of W-SW is the working wind and it is stable, 15-20 knots on a Huelva thermal afternoon and rarely above 22 kt. NW and NE are land winds here and not worth rigging for. There are three access points, Los Negritos, El Electrico and La Culata, with summer navigation lanes at El Electrico and La Culata.
La Culata is the one to respect, for the currents and the rocky shore. Summer is the quiet season, and not in a good way, since the wind often fails; the thermal comes in after midday when it comes at all, and the autumn-to-spring lows are the more reliable bet.

fills in: After midday for the Huelva spring/summer thermal.

Typical strength

15-20 in Huelva thermal afternoons; rarely above 22 kt in Poniente.

Poniente is stable. El Portil comes alive on storm systems and empties out in summer for lack of wind.
Poniente works with autumn-spring lows and summer thermals. Levante can work only in limited strong Strait-driven setups from spring to autumn. Summer is less windy here than some neighbouring spots.
The regional record backs that shape: monthly means around Huelva sit at 4-7 knots, weakest in December and January, turning SW to WSW from March through October, so the days worth driving for are the ones a front or a strong thermal lifts well above the mean.

Thermal or synoptic

thermal in summer; storms from autumn to spring

Also on record

Monthly mean wind for the wider Punta Umbria area runs around 14.1-18.3 km/h, roughly 8-10 kt. No El Portil-specific annual mean was found.

The quiver, in words

Nothing published. Against the usual 15-20 knots an 80 kg rider is on 10-12 m, dropping to 8-9 m on the storm days that push past 22 knots and going up to 13-14 m or a foil on a soft summer thermal. Indicative, worked from the wind range rather than measured on the bar.

Direction to shore

Poniente and SW are the normal usable directions. NW and NE are land winds here, and not recommended.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

ocean/sandbar lagoon

Standing depth

Shallow, with the flat-water lagoons behind the sandbar reportedly very safe.

Tides

Atlantic tide, two highs and two lows a day. Heights reach about 1.9 m above and 1.9 m below mean level at the extremes, so a big spring shifts over 3 m of water while a mid-coefficient day moves 1.7-2 m; on 7 September 2026, coefficient 66, the swing ran from 1.0 m at 13:08 to -1.0 m at 19:38. Coefficients over 90 and under 30 both turn up inside the same fortnight, so two trips a week apart are not the same spot.

Temperature

22°C summer · 15°C winter

Wetsuit

Summer shorts or shorty; winter long wetsuit; spring/autumn intermediate suit.

Currents

Currents run at La Culata. No figure for their strength or the tide stage that brings them was found.

15–24°C water
Long sandy beach with a large sandbar in front of the beach, flat-water lagoons/corridors behind the bar, chop and small waves, and waves breaking on the ocean side of the bar.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
The shallow lagoons take any level. Los Negritos and El Electrico suit lower through high level; La Culata is medium and up, because of the currents and the rocky shore.

Rescue

VHF channel 16

No kite-specific rescue is published for El Portil, and no municipal lifeguard schedule for this beach could be found on the Punta Umbria or Cartaya sites. Maritime emergencies on this coast are coordinated from the Huelva rescue centre: 900 202 202, 112, or VHF channel 16 (2026).
Plan on self-rescue and a partner on the beach, particularly at La Culata where the current runs.

Launch

Long sandy beach with access points at Los Negritos, El Electrico and La Culata; summer navigation lanes run at El Electrico and La Culata.

Rules & access
2026: summer navigation lanes at El Electrico and La Culata separate boat traffic from swimmers and riders, and they have been part of the beach layout since at least 2016. No Punta Umbria or Cartaya beach ordinance confirming the dates or the boundaries could be found, so the marked lanes and the buoys on the sand are the only reliable version - read them before you rig. The beach sits in the municipality of Punta Umbria, with Nuevo Portil and the Rio Piedras side toward Cartaya.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Treat La Culata as an intermediate-and-up launch; the currents and the rocky shore are the reason.
  • Skip NW and NE days unless a local school confirms a sheltered option and a rescue plan.
  • Find the marked summer navigation lanes before you set up, and rig outside them.
  • For the flat corridors, stay behind the sandbar; the ocean side of the bar is where the waves break.
  • Turn up after midday in spring and summer, when the Huelva thermal fills in.
  • Read the tide table before you commit. The swing runs past 3 m on a spring, so work out where the water will be at the bottom of it rather than at the moment you launch.
