Punta Umbria is a working Huelva kite area with three named zones: La Canaleta, La Ria and El Camaron. The normal wind is Poniente from W-SW, stable, filling in after midday in spring and summer at 15-20 knots and rarely above 22 kt. From autumn to spring it comes off Atlantic low-pressure systems instead, and those sessions are stronger.
La Canaleta and El Camaron are the wave-leaning zones and are best on high and mid tide; La Ria is the freeride and freestyle fallback in north-component wind, which comes in gusty and shifty and asks for more judgement. Levante only reaches here from spring to autumn, and only when the Strait is really firing from a southerly angle.
Summer riding is limited to La Canaleta, and the sand carries plenty of other users in June, July and August. Water sits near 22 C in summer and 15 C in winter, so a 4/3 mm covers the cold months.

Typical strength

Poniente is stable and reliable. NW and NE turn gusty and shifting.
Poniente arrives with Atlantic low-pressure systems from autumn to spring and with thermal wind in summer. Levante can work from spring to autumn only when very strong Strait conditions reach Punta Umbria from a more southerly angle.

Also on record

Monthly averages near Punta Umbria run from about 14.1 km/h in September to 18.3 km/h in December, roughly 8-10 kt as monthly means. Indicative averages, not session wind.

The quiver, in words

Nothing published by the local schools. Indicative for a 75-85 kg rider: 10-12 m on the usual 15-20 knot spring and summer Poniente, 9 m when it touches 22 knots, 7-8 m on the stronger autumn-to-spring frontal Poniente. Derived from the published wind range, not from local practice.

Direction to shore

Side-onshore to onshore on the open beach. NW, N and NE components come in gusty, shifting or land-influenced, and La Ria takes some of those north-component sessions.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

ocean/estuary

Standing depth

The open beach shelves gently over sand, and with a 2-3 m tidal swing the wadeable band moves a long way through the cycle, so a spot that is chest-deep at high water is very different six hours later. La Ria is the estuary channel: deeper, moving, and not a stand-up spot at all.No measured standing depth has been published for any of the three zones, so treat this as indicative.

Tides

Semi-diurnal Atlantic tide, two highs and two lows a day, and the swing is real: highs run roughly 2.3-3.2 m and lows 0.0-0.8 m, so around 3.2 m on springs and nearer 2 m on neaps. High and mid tide give the best of La Canaleta and El Camaron.

Temperature

22°C summer · 15°C winter

Wetsuit

Summer shorts or shorty; winter long wetsuit or 4/3 mm; spring/autumn intermediate suit.

Currents

Punta Umbria turns hazardous when the sea is up. No detailed current information was found.

15–25°C water
Open sandy Atlantic beach with chop and small waves; La Canaleta and El Camaron are the wave-favored zones, while La Ria is used for freeride/freestyle in north-component winds.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
La Canaleta and El Camaron are reportedly workable from low level upward. La Ria needs more experience, especially in NW and NE.

Rules & access
Summer: kitesurfing at Punta Umbria is allowed only at La Canaleta, with La Ria and El Camaron closed for the season. That restriction is stated in 2016 sources and still stated in 2022 and 2026. Along the wider Huelva coast the summer restriction period runs from 15 June, and bathers have right of way everywhere.
The municipal beach-use ordinance itself is not published, so the exact 2026 dates, hours and zone boundaries are unconfirmed.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • In summer rig at La Canaleta, the only zone open to kites, and read the signage before you pump.
  • Wait for the thermal after midday in spring and summer; the morning is usually thin.
  • Take La Ria only if you can handle gusty NW that shifts toward the north, and NE.
  • Aim for high or mid tide at La Canaleta and El Camaron to get the best of the wave.
  • Follow the lifeguard and salvamento instructions in summer, and stay off the water when the sea is up; no kite-specific rescue exists here.
  • Check the tide before you commit to a session. The range runs to about 3 m on springs and the beach looks like a different place at either end of it.
