The spot

Somo is the main kite and surf beach at the eastern entrance to the Bahia de Santander. The open beach is sand and waves; La Poza, the flatter estuary water beside it, is where the schools do their kite and windsurf teaching.

Wind patterns

The wind to plan around is NE, the Nordeste, stable through spring and summer at 12-17 knots and picking up another 3-5 knots from thermal effect on a summer afternoon. N and NW are frontal or storm winds, NW locally called Gallego, and it can hand you 12-14 knots or 40 knots depending on the system.

Summer zoning

The catch is the summer zoning: from 15 June to 15 September every kite has to go up and come down inside the varada zone about 1 km west of the Somo beach parking, so budget the walk.

Hazards

Two things that never show on a forecast: the Santander shipping channel, which is a hard boundary once you ride out, and the shipwreck remains that surface at low tide near the Northwind access.

Best practical kite months are late spring through September for NE thermal/frontal mix, with stronger wave and storm setups in autumn, winter and spring. From 15 June to 15 September, kite launching/landing is constrained to the marked varada zone about 1 km west of the Somo beach parking.

Rescue

No dedicated kite rescue boat is on record.

Somo is a serviced beach with lifeguard cover and a police presence through the bathing season, and the schools watch their own students; an independent rider in trouble is relying on that general cover, not on a kite boat.

SW is the wind that turns a mistake into a rescue, since it blows offshore and gusty.

Launch

Wide sand on the north side of the Santander bay entrance. From 15 June to 15 September all kiters must raise and lower kites inside the kite varada zone about 1 km west of the Somo beach parking. Outside those dates navigation is open on the rest of the beach, with care around bathers and surfers.

E wind has a 100-200 m nearshore wind-shadow band from Loredo before becoming stable farther out.

2026: From 15 June to 15 September there is a kitesurf varada zone about 1 km west of the Somo beach parking, and all kiters must launch and land inside that zone. Outside those dates, navigation is open on the rest of the beach, while still keeping away from bathers and surf/SUP peaks.

Verify current-year beach signage, since this information dates to 2018.

Rider tips

In summer, rig only inside the marked varada zone about 1 km west of the main Somo parking, and plan for the walk.
Learn at La Poza or with a school. The open beach adds waves, tide and traffic on top of the wind.
Stay well outside the Santander bay navigation channel once you head away from shore; merchant ships and ferries use it.
Check where the shipwreck remains are sitting at low tide before doing runs near the Northwind access.
On E wind, expect the first 100-200 m off the beach to be light behind Loredo before it cleans up farther out.
If N is blowing cold, gusty and disordered, take the sheltered alternative instead of forcing a Somo session.
Get a local to point out El Machon before you ride La Poza. It lines up the oyster rocks, which are sharp and sit just under the surface at low and mid tide.
Do not go out in SW. Offshore, gusty, anything from 12 to 40 kt, and Pedrena is the better call in that direction.

Somo is across the Bahia de Santander from Santander, connected by road via Pedrena and by regular passenger boat service with Santander/Pedrena. Somo is about a 30-minute drive from Santander.
