The spot

Location

Ponta Mamoli is a real spot with thin documentation: an open sandy bay on the far southern Mozambique coast, 10 km north of Ponta Malongane, inside the Ponta do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve. There is no kite centre. You launch off the beach into shallow mixed water with chop and small waves, and the wind that works is NE or SE.

Season and the downwinder

August to December holds up better than the April to September season the record used to carry. Almost nobody stays at Mamoli to ride Mamoli: this is the top of the classic two-hour downwinder south to Ponta do Ouro, so bring a driver and a meeting point.

Constraints and access

Reefs, open ocean, turtle nests and the distance to anyone who could help are the real constraints, and there is no boat, no lifeguard and no number to call. Access from Maputo has improved, but the tar stops well short of the beach, so a 4x4 or an arranged transfer is not optional.

No lifeguard, no kite rescue boat, no published emergency number. The lodges here run snorkelling and sea-safari boats for their own guests and ski-boats and jet skis launch from designated strips nearby, but none of that is kite cover and none of it is on standby.

The nearest permanent boat operations are the dive centres 10 km south at Ponta Malongane and about 17 km south at Ponta do Ouro, which is also the nearest fuel, bank and shop.

Sandy beach launch on an open, forested-dune coast 10 km north of Ponta Malongane, the last built-up point before the Maputo Elephant Reserve. 2026: kitesurf is named among the allowed visitor activities in the Ponta do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve, the 678 km2 transfrontier reserve that runs three nautical miles offshore along this coast and is open 24 hours; there is no kite permit, launch zoning or seasonal kite ban.

Beach driving

Two other rules bite here. Driving on the beach is prohibited outside designated boat-launch strips and carries a heavy fine.

Boat and support

And a temporary maritime licence is required for private boats, jet skis, kayaks, diving and fishing; kites are not on that list, but a support boat or a kayak is.

Turtle nesting

Loggerhead and leatherback turtles nest along this beach, with the nesting window given as October to February and reserve vehicle and foot patrols on the nesting sites running to the end of March.

Keep off marked nests, keep vehicles off the sand, and ask at your lodge which stretches are being monitored.

Rider tips

Bring the whole quiver and a full repair kit. Nothing is rented, sold or fixed at Mamoli.
Plan the downwinder properly: roughly two hours south past empty beach to Ponta do Ouro, with a driver, a meeting point, a buddy and a phone that works at both ends.
Ask the lodge staff, or the reserve contacts, what the current beach and wildlife rules are before you rig.
Treat NE and SE as different days. Both work, but NE is the classic side-onshore direction one bay south at Ponta do Ouro.
Keep vehicles off the sand. Beach driving is fined here, and outside the marked launch strips you are driving over turtle nests from October.
Give the turtles, dolphins and whales room. This is a protected marine reserve and you are the visitor.
Book any lesson 10 km south at Malongane. Nothing at Mamoli teaches.

Maputo International Airport (MPM); Johannesburg O.R. Tambo (JNB) is a common international connection before flying to Maputo.

Route
