Mozambique's twelve spots run down a long stretch of Indian Ocean coast, from Ponta do Ouro near the South African border to Pemba in the far north.

Vilanculos is the developed anchor, kiting the mainland beach opposite the Bazaruto Archipelago on warm, shallow tidal sandbanks, while Bilene works the flat water of Lagoa Uembje as an easy weekend run from Johannesburg or Maputo.

Most of the coast rides April through November on trade wind, though Pemba's Murrebue lagoon carries a real security caveat around Cabo Delgado.

It suits independent, adventure-minded riders more than resort-package ones.

NotesInternet is widely available in Maputo and the tourist areas, sporadic elsewhere, which matters for the remoter coast spots (Bilene, Vilanculos, Ponta do Ouro). How the three operators rank against each other in those coastal towns is unconfirmed.

Is kiting covered?General rule across the atlas: standard travel and medical policies typically exclude kitesurfing unless a specific sports or extreme-activity rider is purchased; nothing here is Mozambique-specific.
Healthcare and evacuationWith limited rural medical infrastructure and the active security situation in Cabo Delgado province, medevac-inclusive insurance is commonly recommended for northern Mozambique.

Health

VaccinesMalaria prophylaxis is essential nationwide and chloroquine no longer works against local strains; see a doctor before travel. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is commonly required only if you arrive from a country with risk of yellow fever transmission.

Road safetyPosted speed limits: 60 km/h in towns, 100 km/h on open roads.Travelers are advised to avoid the EN6 between Beira and Chimoio, sections of the EN1 between Caia and Gorongosa, and the Save River area due to reported armed attacks, and to avoid Cabo Delgado Province and north-eastern Nampula Province entirely; Cabo Delgado is where Pemba is located, so this directly affects the Pemba kite destination and should be checked against current travel advisories before booking.
4x4 contexts4WD-only restrictions apply at certain border crossings; the soft-sand access roads to coastal spots like Vilanculos, Tofo and Ponta do Ouro reportedly need 4x4.
