The spot

Morrungulo is a remote beach on the Inhambane coast near Massinga, not a Vilanculos-area lagoon as the seed record had it, and the spelling with two r's is the one that works on maps and booking pages. Chalets and campsites sit on an unspoiled sand beach with the ocean straight in front.

Wind and conditions

Kite coverage is thinner here than for Bilene, Tofo or Vilanculos, and the beach turns up mostly in wind and kite forecast directories under a handful of spellings. What you get is open-ocean chop and small waves rather than standing-depth flat water.

Planning your trip

August to October is the best-supported window; the other seasons quoted run May-October, or January, February and August-December. Bring your own kite equipment, ask the resort team about tide and sea state, and plan the session as self-supported, because no kite school or rescue is on record on site.

Inhambane is the closest airport, and self-drivers come off the EN1 near Massinga onto 13 km of dirt and clay road.

No flat standing-depth area is documented anywhere. Shallow reef and rock pools sit close in and are shallow enough to snorkel over on the right tide, which is also why they are the last place you want to be dropped; the sand in front of the camp is open ocean, with chop, swell and shorebreak rather than a wading shelf.No measured depth profile exists for the launch, and the resort team is the only source of a current read on tide and sea state.

Chop and small waves over an ocean sand beach. There are beach breaks, rolling waves, stretches of calm paddling water, shallow reef and rock pools near shore, and no flat-water lagoon or standing-depth learning area was found.

A Praia de Massinga forecast on 27 August 2026 showed 0.6-0.9 m surf, SSE wind and 23 °C water, which is closer to what to expect than lagoon-flat. Sylvia Shoal and the other reefs offshore are dive sites.

Nothing kite-specific, and no lifeguard on record. The water straight in front of camp is treated as a bathing area — jet skis are banned there for exactly that reason — and the designated boat launch sits 800 m north, so the dive and fishing boats working out of it are the only craft plausibly within reach of a rider in trouble.

2026: driving on the beach is illegal except for launching a boat, with a 20,000 MTS fine, and boats use the designated launch site 800 m north. Quad bikes and motorbikes are not allowed in camp, and no jet skis are permitted in front of camp because it is a safe bathing area.

No kitesurf-specific permit, zoning or seasonal restriction is published for 2026.

Bring kite gear and spares. The rental list on site covers kayaks, SUPs and bodyboards.
Ask the resort team about tide, shorebreak, swimming zones and boat activity before you launch.
Keep the car off the beach except where boat launching is explicitly allowed: the fine quoted is 20,000 MTS (2026).
Book lessons or backup rental in Tofo or Vilanculos rather than counting on support at Morrungulo.
Bring kite gear and spares. The rental list on site covers kayaks, SUPs and bodyboards, and the resort's own line is to bring your own kitesurfing kit.
Reception closes at 16:30. Sort your tide and sea-state questions before an afternoon session, not during one.
The shallow reef and rock pools near shore are a snorkelling attraction and a downwind hazard at the same time. Know where they are before you need to know.

Inhambane Airport is the closest airport to Morrungulo Beach Lodge; Vilanculos Airport is farther north.

Route

Morrungulo is about 560 km north of Maputo, between Inhambane and Vilanculos.From the south, pass Massinga, carry on 7 km north, turn at Anhane and follow 13 km of dirt road to the beach. No 4x4 is needed in normal conditions and the clay road is generally good; heavy rain is the argument for a 4x4 or high clearance.
