also known as Itacaré, Itacare, Concha Beach

Praia da Concha has no other spot on this map within 40 km of it. straight-line distance

Praia da Concha is Itacaré's town beach, close to the centre and facing the Rio de Contas mouth and Pontal, and it is the main kite spot in town, though the local surf-school world barely mentions kites at all. Season is July to January with the wind E-SE, side-on, 16-24 knots.
The tide sets the water: at low tide it is smooth near the shore, at high tide it chops up and waves come through, and that is the wave and strapless window.
The catch is that it is a busy town beach with huts and coconut trees and families in the water, so you rig where you can and give the swimmers the room they were there first for. There is a moderate current toward the river mouth; ride the middle of the beach and leave the mouth alone.
No named kite school; the surf and kite huts along the sand keep a loose eye on things. Not a beginner spot: nobody has published a standing-depth area for lessons, and the crowd rules it out anyway. December to February is peak season for the town, and a 2024 municipal decree sets beach conduct rules, none of them kite-specific.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

ocean/river mouth

Standing depth

Calm and shallow by the shore; how far out you can stand with a kite is unconfirmed.

Tides

High tide brings choppy water and waves, while low tide makes the shore water smoother.

Temperature

27-28°C summer · 25-26°C winter

Wetsuit

Usually no wetsuit; lycra/sun protection is more relevant than neoprene.

Currents

Moderate flow off the Rio de Contas mouth, and it pulls away from the beach rather than along it. The mouth itself runs strong enough that the ocean side across the estuary is treated as dangerous for swimming, with the current dragging off the peak and out to sea. Inside Concha, near the shore, the water is calm.Do not tack out toward the bar to find out where the line is.

26–30°C water
Sheltered town beach facing the Rio de Contas estuary and Pontal. Calm most of the time; waves come in on the high tide.

Your level

not for beginners hereintermediateadvanced
Chop and high-tide waves, ridden freeride or strapless: that is what happens here. The water is calm enough for swimmers, but nobody has shown it works for a kite lesson, and the crowd is against it.

Rescue

Municipal lifeguards cover Praia da Concha. It is the town beach and it is watched, and the crew is put through a refresher in first aid and water rescue run by Itacare's tourism department with the Bahia military fire brigade, most recently in September 2026. None of it is kite-specific: there is no school on the sand, no support boat and nobody coming out on a ski for a downed kite.
Emergencies are 193 for the fire brigade and 192 for the ambulance.

Launch

Sand launch on the town beach, a short walk from Itacaré centre. A few surf and kite huts along the sand keep an eye on things; there is no named kite school.

Space

Unknown for rigging. This is the closest and busiest beach in town, with the huts to match.

Hazards riders report 13

  • waves at high tide
  • shared tourist beach
  • possible shorebreak
  • tourist beach users
  • Rio de Contas mouth currents unconfirmed
  • limited kite-specific local-source confirmation
  • Waves and chop at high tide
  • Possible shorebreak
  • Busy tourist beach: swimmers, huts, families, sunset crowds
  • Strong outgoing current at the Rio de Contas mouth, running off the beach and out to sea
  • Pontal and the estuary bar sit across the river mouth, a five to ten minute paddle away, not a walk back
  • No kite school, no support boat and no kite-specific rescue on the beach
  • Lifeguards are there for swimmers, not for kite equipment
Rules & access
Itacaré's Decreto 1.459 of 2024 sets conduct and inspection rules for all municipal beaches. Nothing in it is about kites, and no kite-specific rule for Concha has turned up.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Ride the low tide if you want smooth water near shore; wait for high tide if you want the waves.
  • Rig well clear of the huts and the swimmers; Concha is the busiest beach in town and the 2024 municipal decree covers conduct and inspection on the beaches.
  • Ask a local rider about the current at the Rio de Contas mouth before you tack out that way; stay in the main riding area otherwise.
  • Fly into Ilhéus and take the BA-001, 70-120 minutes by car or transfer; the bus from the Ilhéus station takes about 1h40.
  • No wind: surf at Tiririca, Resende or Itacarezinho, or take a SUP or kayak out on Concha itself.
  • Fly into Ilheus and take the BA-001, 70-120 minutes by car or transfer; the bus from the Ilheus station takes about 1h40.
  • Lifeguards watch Concha, but they are watching swimmers. A kite down in the river current is your problem: 193 for the fire brigade, 192 for the ambulance.
  • Pontal is across the river mouth, not further along the sand. Surfers paddle five to ten minutes over from Concha and the current there runs out to sea, so do not plan on riding across and walking home.

FAQ

When is the best time to kitesurf at Praia da Concha?

The main kitesurf season runs from July to January.

Is Praia da Concha suitable for beginners?

Not really. The spot is framed around choppy water, waves at high tide, and freeride or strapless riding, so beginner suitability has not been confirmed.

What is the wind like?

Wind blows E-SE, side-on to the beach, at roughly 16-24 knots.

What hazards should riders know about?

Waves build at high tide, and the beach is shared with swimmers, families and beach-hut visitors, so riders need extra distance.
