Praia do Flamengo has no other spot on this map within 40 km of it. straight-line distance

Praia do Flamengo is Salvador's city kite beach, on the open Atlantic in the Stella Maris/Aleluia stretch a few minutes from the airport. Aleluia is the wave end; Stella Maris and Praia do Flamengo are the wider urban beach where people freeride and jump.
The wind is the Northeast Brazil trade, east to southeast, side-onshore, roughly 15-25 knots from July to February, though the season is less dependable here than in Ceara or Rio Grande do Norte and different lists draw the window differently. Reefs show at low tide with flat basins between them; at high tide it is waves and chop.
Rip currents are reported. You launch from sand on a beach shared with surfers, joggers, families and bathers, and there is no school on the beach itself, so bring your own gear and your own buddy. Not a beginner spot.

The usual Northeast Brazil trade pattern in season, but less consistent than Ceara or Rio Grande do Norte; Salvador is not a place you fly to for guaranteed wind.
East to southeast trades from July into February, reinforced by a local sea breeze. The window is drawn differently depending on where you look: July-January; January-March plus May-July; or a northeast-dominant September-February with south and southeast maral wind through the winter, when the crowd shifts to the sheltered point at Casquinha de Siri in Piata. Unresolved.

Indicative for a 75-85 kg rider, no local gear survey: 12m at the 15-17 kt end, 9m through the usual 18-22 kt, 7m once it pushes past 25. On a foil the local light-wind floor is 7-8 kt.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

ocean

Standing depth

No measured depth. At low water the reefs enclose shallow flat basins near the shore over sand; as the tide fills those basins go and there is nothing shallow left to stand in.

Tides

Tidal Atlantic beach, roughly 0.3-2.2 m through the range. Low water uncovers the reefs and leaves flat basins between them close to the sand. Mid tide is chop with flat patches. On the high the swell stands up and the outside becomes a wave spot with 1-2 m faces.

Temperature

28°C summer · 26°C winter

Wetsuit

No wetsuit normally needed; rash vest/sun protection is typical in warm water.

Currents

Surf and rip currents are reported along the Flamengo/Aleluia stretch; how they behave on a kiteable day is not documented.

26–30°C water
Open urban Atlantic beach in the Stella Maris/Flamengo/Aleluia sector, with waves and reef sections. Stella Maris is a broad urban kite beach, and Aleluia is a wave-sailing area.

Your level

Intermediate and up. Waves, reefs, a shared urban beach and reported currents rule it out as a first-lessons beach, even though there are flat pockets between the reefs at low tide.

Rescue

No rescue service at Flamengo/Stella Maris. The nearest active school base is at Terceira Ponte, elsewhere in Salvador, so count on nothing beyond a buddy on the beach.

Launch

Sandy urban beach launch on the Stella Maris/Praia do Flamengo shore. The beach stays wide enough to launch and land even at high water, and the bottom in the riding areas is sand rather than sharp coral.

Space

Wide beach, shared with surfers, joggers, families, and bathers.

Rider tips

  • Check the Salvador tide table before you go: reefs are exposed at low tide and the flat basins between them fill and vanish with the water level.
  • There is no kite school on the beach; the nearest active base is Pequeno's at Terceira Ponte, and its lessons move between beaches with the wind.
  • Ask the local riders where people are rigging between Flamengo, Aleluia and Stella Maris before you unroll a kite.
  • On busy days launch well away from the bathers and stay outside the surfers' line.
  • When the winter south and southeast maral wind takes over, the locals stop riding here and go to the sheltered point at Casquinha de Siri in Piata.
  • Light day? A foil goes in 7-8 knots on this coast, which is roughly half what a twin-tip needs.
