Nortada

14:00

In the Nortada months the wind is an afternoon business: the N to NW flow builds from around 14:00 and eases off late in the afternoon. Frontal SW and W days ignore that clock and can blow at any hour, often with more swell attached. This timing is the regional west-coast pattern, not a measurement from the beach.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Praia de Matosinhos is the city beach on the Atlantic side of Porto, better known for surf and bodyboard than for kites, though kitesurf uses the same strong surf and the same extensive sand. Good wind is not frequent.
When it arrives it is 10-20 knots over chop and small to medium waves, usually from NW and SW, with W, S and SW the pick of them. Tide does not matter: all of them work.
It is an intermediate and expert beach, not for the water but for the mole, the rocks and the crowd, which between them leave no room for a bad launch. Water runs roughly 18-21 C at the late summer peak and 13-15 C in late winter, so you are in neoprene every session.
Rescue, showers, toilets, food and parking are all on hand, and the promenade behind the sand stays busy through the bathing season.

Typical strength

10-20

Good winds are not very frequent, but when it works the wind is typically 10-20 knots. Modelled data for August puts WNW as the most common direction, though local effects along the bay may differ.
Kiteable wind is not frequent here. The regional Nortada runs May to September, with north and northwest wind covering roughly 82% of July and August, gusting hardest through the afternoon. Outside that window Matosinhos rides on frontal southerly and westerly systems, which are the directions the spot actually prefers.

The quiver, in words

No rider-reported sizes for this beach. Indicative for a 75-85 kg rider across the usual 10-20 knot range: 12 m at the light end, 9-10 m once it settles near 20 knots, 7-8 m only when a winter southwesterly overdelivers.

Direction to shore

W is onshore; SW is side-onshore to onshore; NW/N is side-shore to side-onshore depending on exact position in the bay

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Rules & access
2026: the Autoridade Maritima Nacional beach edict for mainland Portugal prohibits surf, kitesurf, windsurf and similar sports in areas reserved for bathers, and prohibits nautical craft outside marked channels or areas. The Praia de Matosinhos 2026 bathing season runs 13 June to 13 September, with lifeguards and beach equipment operating in that window. No Matosinhos-specific kite corridor or permit rule is confirmed.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Stay out of the swimmer areas during the 1 June to 30 September bathing season unless local signage marks a permitted channel.
  • Walk the mole and the rocks before you launch, and work out where a downwind drift puts you.
  • Expect less frequent kiteable wind than the Nortada spots farther north.
  • Bring enough neoprene for wind chill even in summer.
  • Stay out of the swimmer zones during the 13 June to 13 September 2026 bathing season unless local signage marks a permitted channel.
  • In summer, come for the afternoon. The Nortada rarely has anything worth rigging for before midday.
