Nortada

12:00 · 15:00

Summer sea-breeze timing. The nortada builds from the start of the afternoon, is hardest between 12:00 and 15:00, and eases off through the late afternoon. Mornings are often light.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Maceda is a long open Atlantic beach south of Espinho, backed by the Ovar dune pine forest and quiet in a way the resort beaches up the coast are not. The water is chop with small to medium waves, and it works on northerly wind, the summer Nortada from N to NW.
Low tide is the tide people prefer; high tide brings shore break onto the sand. This is intermediate and expert ground, not somewhere to teach yourself. The water is cold all year, so the full suit comes even in summer.
Erosion scarps stand at both ends of the beach, and through the 2026 bathing season the general Portuguese beach rules keep riders out of the areas reserved for swimmers. Very little has been published about Maceda in particular: no measured wind averages, no confirmed best months, no kite school on the beach.

fills in: Summer sea-breeze timing. The nortada builds from the start of the afternoon, is hardest between 12:00 and 15:00, and eases off through the late afternoon. Mornings are often light.

Typical strength

The nortada is counted from about 14 kt upward. Ordinary summer afternoons on this coast sit around 15-20 kt, and the harder days run 19-24 kt with gusts well above. West-coast regional figures; nothing is measured at this beach.

It reportedly works best with northerly winds, but no measured consistency data is published for this beach.
Portugal's west-coast Nortada is a summer N to NW wind pattern; no confirmed best months are given for Maceda specifically.

The quiver, in words

For a 75-85 kg rider on a summer nortada afternoon: 10-12 m while it is still building, 9 m through the usual 15-20 kt band, 7-8 m once it pushes past 20 kt. Derived from the regional wind band rather than from rider reports here.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Tides

Low tide is listed as the best tide, with high tide able to create shore break.

Temperature

18-21°C summer · 13-15°C winter

Wetsuit

The water is cold and a wetsuit is always needed. Sea temperatures up the coast at Matosinhos point to about a 3/2 mm suit around the late-August peak and 4/3 mm plus boots around late February.

Currents

Strong current and rough sea are reported for mid-September; no official current pattern is published.

Rules & access
2026: the bathing season runs 13 June to 15 September with a staffed lifeguard post; outside those dates the beach is open but unwatched. Dogs are banned. The national beach edict for mainland Portugal keeps kitesurf, like surf and windsurf, out of the areas reserved for bathers and holds nautical craft to marked channels or areas. Nothing kite-specific has been published for this beach.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Check the tide before you drive out; low tide is the only tide anyone recommends here.
  • Treat high tide as a shore-break problem, not a detail.
  • Bring a full wetsuit even in summer.
  • Read the beach signage before launching in the bathing season.
  • Park above the beach off Avenida da N.A.T.O. and walk down through the pine forest.

Getting there

FAQ

What is the wind like?

Is it suitable for beginners?

No, open Atlantic waves, high-tide shore break and cold water make it unsuitable as an unguided beginner spot.

What is the tide advice?

Low tide is the preferred tide; high tide can create shore break.

Are there rules or restricted zones?

During the 2026 bathing season, general Portuguese beach rules require riders to stay out of areas reserved for swimmers.
