Nortada

13:00

The Nortada usually fills in from about 13:00 and keeps building through the afternoon into the evening. Mornings are the quiet half of the day through the thermal season.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Murtosa sits on the inside of the Ria de Aveiro, and the water is the reason to come: shallow, flat to slightly choppy, with a school launch on the bank. This is the forgiving end of Portugal. The summer Nortada does the work, north to northwest, and south winds turn up in winter.
The tide changes the texture and the channels, so watch the water drain and stay off the channel edges where the flow runs hardest. Clube Nortada has been on this site since 1993, rides a private beach with its own safety cover, and the water is rarely busy.
If you want waves you drive: Barra, Costa Nova and Gafanha are the other Ria spots, and the ocean beaches are on the far side of the lagoon.

Typical strength

Regular and forgiving for a lagoon, and lighter than Viana do Castelo.
Best months are April-October, with May-September the warm core. The engine is the summer NW Nortada thermal. Wind is reported year-round, but the reliable travel window stays late spring to early autumn.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

flat

Standing depth

Shallow and standable, waist-deep in the riding area at both high and low tide, over a bottom stable enough for long uninterrupted crossings. On a falling tide it thins out faster than a foil wants.

Tides

The lagoon changes with the tide: chop at high water, flatter at low. Treat the channels with care or stay out of them.

Temperature

22°C summer · 19°C winter

Wetsuit

Shorts or shorty in summer, shorty in spring/autumn, normal full wetsuit in winter.

Currents

The tidal channels run stronger than the open lagoon. Avoid them, or cross with care.

14–19°C water
This is inside the Ria de Aveiro, not on the exposed Atlantic beach: flat to slightly choppy, shallow, no waves at the school launch. The wider Ria is a shallow coastal lagoon with big intertidal flats, so water level and channels decide where you can ride.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
A beginner spot: flat, shallow, with a school and rescue on site. Intermediates and advanced riders use it for freeride, freestyle, windsurf and wingfoil. Waves are on the Atlantic beaches nearby, not at the lagoon launch.

Hazards riders report 9

  • no lifeguards on the lagoon side
  • shellfish beds and hidden rocky spots
  • quickly draining tidal channels
  • stronger current near tidal channels
  • rapidly changing shallow lagoon water levels
  • Shellfish beds and natural lagoon obstacles are unconfirmed here, so ask before riding outside the school area.
  • private-school launch access may differ from public access
  • electric poles and a road crossing on the land side of the launch
  • too little depth for foiling once the tide is falling
Rules & access
2025: everyone kites with a leash on this beach. The Clube Nortada area is private, so follow the club's access rules and instructions.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Watch the flag and the other riders; the gusty afternoons are underreported by the weather apps.
  • Ask the school where the tide and the channels put the limit before you ride away from the launch.
  • Use the lagoon for first lessons, freestyle and progression, and drive to the Atlantic side only if you want waves.
  • Aim for the afternoon in the Nortada season.
  • Carry a shorty or a full suit outside the warmest weeks, even though the lagoon is warmer than the open ocean.
  • Check with Clube Nortada whether you can use the private launch.
