When it fills in

Trade wind, so it runs day and night rather than switching on at an hour. The island pattern in summer is a moderate morning, around 20 knots, building through the day to its strongest in the afternoon. Indicative: nothing hour-by-hour has been recorded for Puerto Lajas.

Puerto Lajas is an urban fishing-village beach just north of Puerto del Rosario on Fuerteventura's east coast, and the riding happens over reef. The wind is trade: NNE and NE mostly, with N and NW also usable, and 1-3 m NE swell behind it.
The beach is small, sand with rocks and stones, so look at the entry before you pump. It works on all tides. Treat it as an advanced spot.
The point can throw clean lefts when a north swell lines up with northerly wind, and locals ride it then; the line-up is shared with surfers, windsurfers and wingers, so the priority conversation happens in the water. Season figures disagree, running April-September, May-September, or a best-wind window of March-August with peaks around March/April and July/August.
Typical wind speed and kite sizes are unconfirmed here, and no rescue cover is published for the spot.

trade

fills in: Trade wind, so it runs day and night rather than switching on at an hour. The island pattern in summer is a moderate morning, around 20 knots, building through the day to its strongest in the afternoon. Indicative: nothing hour-by-hour has been recorded for Puerto Lajas.

Typical strength

15-25 knots is the trade band along this coast from June to September, gusting past 30 on the strongest days. Reportedly 15-20 at Puerto Lajas itself. Nothing measures the spot, so both figures are indicative.

NE trade wind. Nearby Fuerteventura spots reportedly go very offshore and gusty; unconfirmed for Puerto Lajas itself.
Season figures disagree: April-September or May-September, with the best wind probability put at March-August and peaks around March/April and July/August.

The quiver, in words

Indicative, worked back from the island-wide trade band rather than a local school table. For 75-85 kg: 7-9 m from June to September, when 15-25 knots is normal and afternoons can push past 30; 9-12 m in spring and autumn; 10-12 m in winter, when the wind is lighter and the swell is the reason you came. A 7 m earns its place on peak summer afternoons.

Direction to shore

North and northeast, the working directions, arrive side-shore to cross-onshore along this east-facing bay. South to south-easterly wind switches on the point at the southern end.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Tides

All tides work for kite, wing and windsurf. Low water is the one to think about, because the reef sits closer to the surface then and the volcanic rock is sharp. Booties are the sensible call at any state of tide.

Temperature

22°C summer · 19°C winter

Wetsuit

Shorty in spring, summer and autumn; shorty or full suit in winter. Across Fuerteventura the usual call is 2 mm or lycra in May-October and 3/2 mm in November-February.

Rescue

One of the four Puerto del Rosario beaches covered by the municipal lifeguard service, staffed every day including holidays: 11:00-19:00 from 1 May to 31 October, 10:00-17:00 from 1 November to 30 April.
The contract was awarded in 2022 for two years plus two years of extension, so it runs through 2026, and it puts 12 lifeguards across the four beaches. Cover is prevention and first aid for beach users out to the marked bathing zone. It is not a kite rescue boat, and no direct number for the beach post is published.
General emergencies 112.

Rules & access
The Puerto del Rosario beach ordinance (built on the Ley de Costas, in force in 2026) puts bathing ahead of every other use. Boats and floating craft launch and haul out through marked channels at a maximum 3 knots, sport and recreational navigation is prohibited inside marked bathing zones, and outside any marked zone the same 3-knot limit applies within a default 200 m strip from the shoreline, 50 m on non-beach coastline.
The ordinance covers navigation generally: it does not name kitesurfing or set a seasonal kite ban, unlike some other Basque and Murcian beach ordinances on this coast.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Walk the launch and mark the rocks and stones before you pump; the bottom is reef once you are out.
  • Give way on the point, and expect surfers, windsurfers and wingers on the same peak.
  • Look for a marked bathing zone before launching: navigation inside one is prohibited and the 3-knot limit applies within 200 m of the shore.
  • Shorty from spring through autumn, full suit for the coldest winter sessions.
  • Base in Puerto del Rosario; the drive from FUE is about 12 minutes.
  • Bring booties. The reef is sharp and it comes closest to the surface at low water.
  • Lifeguards work 11:00-19:00 in summer and 10:00-17:00 in winter, but only out to the bathing zone.

FAQ

Is it suitable for beginners?

No, it is rated for advanced riders because of the reef bottom and wave conditions.

What is the wind like?

NNE to NW trade winds, known locally as Alisios, run best from April to September with peaks around March-April and July-August.

What hazards should I know about?

A reef bottom, rocks and stones on the beach, plus 1-3 m waves, are the main risks in this shared surf, windsurf and wing area.

Are there rules or restricted zones?

The municipal ordinance gives bathing priority, requires marked sports areas, and limits navigation to 3 knots within 200 m of shore where no zone is marked.
