Spiaggia di Siracusa

also known as Porto Grande di Siracusa

flat wateradvanced only

Spiaggia di Siracusa has no other spot on this map within 40 km of it. straight-line distance

Porto Grande is Syracuse's natural harbour, a bay of roughly 1,200 metres with the walled old town of Ortigia across the water. Inside it the water is flat and good for tricks.
The wind is the catch: it funnels around the town's buildings and the terrain and arrives gusty, and pontoons, moored boats and quay walls sit in the riding area rather than beside it. Direction is the south through southwest arc, Scirocco, Ostro and Libeccio, synoptic weather-system wind rather than a daily thermal you can plan a week around.
This is no place for a first lesson; take a beginner to an open beach and come back here when they can self-rescue. Sea temperature runs from a winter low near 15°C to a summer high around 27°C.
What nobody has published is which quay or beach strip riders launch from, whether launching inside the harbour is currently legal, or which months actually deliver wind.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Porto Grande is Syracuse's large natural harbour, about 1,200m across from the tip of Ortigia island, a naval anchorage historically and now flanked by the modern town. The water inside is flat and good for tricks. Depth and current at the launch area are unconfirmed.

Flat water suits tricks and freestyle, but wind funnelled gusty through the urban harbour, plus pontoons and dock structures in the water, puts a first-timer out of their depth. You want to read a lull and self-rescue before you ride here.

Hazards riders report 6

  • gusty wind
  • harbour pontoons
  • urban obstacles
  • Gusty wind funnelled by the harbour buildings and terrain
  • Pontoons and dock structures in the water
  • Urban-harbour obstacles: moored boats, quay walls

Rider tips

  • Ride here only if you can self-rescue: the gusts come off the buildings, not off open water.
  • Wear neoprene shoes; the launch is an urban shoreline, not a sand beach.
  • Walk the quay and mark the pontoons and moored boats before you pump.
  • Check with a local school whether launching inside Porto Grande is currently allowed.
  • Wait for the south to southwest arc; nothing else is documented working in this harbour.

Getting there

Route

Syracuse has its own railway station, on Sicily's southeastern coast; the city is Sicily's fourth most populous, after Palermo, Catania and Messina.

No-wind days

Ortigia, Syracuse's UNESCO-listed historic island old town, sits directly across the harbour.
