On the clock

11:00 · 12:00 · 14:00 · 17:00

Fills in around 11:00-12:00, peaks between 14:00 and 17:00, and usually drops shortly before sunset; on a strong gradient day it can blow through the night.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Open sea, not a lagoon. The water off Tiki Beach is chop with small waves most days, though flatter patches get reported on some directions. Ponente from the west is the main wind, usually thermal-assisted in the warm season, filling late morning to midday and peaking mid-afternoon.
Scirocco from the southeast is the other setup: warmer, gustier, choppier. May-September is the planning window, and the hottest stretch of July and August can go light, so the shoulder seasons are often the better trip.
The complication is the lido: Tiki is a beach club, and from June through August it comes with umbrellas, sunbeds, swimmers, a bar, which means you launch in the corridor or you do not launch. Intermediates fit best; beginners can take lessons here, but this is an open beach with chop and summer zoning rather than a protected learning lagoon.
Catania is the practical airport, and Pozzallo works as a south-east Sicily base with Modica, Ragusa, Santa Maria del Focallo and the Malta ferry all close.

Typical strength

10-25 knots; common summer thermal sessions are often reported around 15-22 knots

Thermal assistance carries most warm-season days. Very hot spells in July-August can be lighter, and Scirocco arrives gustier and choppier.
Spring into autumn, with summer and the shoulder seasons strongest. May-September is the usual answer for best months; summer gets called the peak with March-November workable, while the counter-view prefers spring and fall because the very hot months can go short on wind.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

mixed

Standing depth

Sand, and it shelves gently: waist to chest deep for the first 80-100 m off the water's edge, about 2 m by 200 m, 3 m by 350-400 m. That gives a long band to body-drag and water-start in before it gets deep, and with a tide range around 0.2 m it barely moves.Depths are read from hydrographic charting rather than measured on the beach; where the white safe-water buoys are laid they sit on the 1.60 m line and red buoys mark the outer edge of the bathers' water.

Tides

Minimal; tide range at Pozzallo is roughly 0.2 m typically, and the spot is considered tide independent.

Temperature

24.6°C summer · 16.1°C winter

Wetsuit

Boardshorts or lycra/shorty in peak summer; shorty in spring/autumn; normal full wetsuit in winter.

15–28°C water
Open Mediterranean beach, generally choppy with small waves, though flat water gets reported too, so expect anything between freeride-flat and chop depending on direction and swell. August water averages 26.6 C, February 15.2 C.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
Beginner lessons run from Tiki Beach and the spot gets tagged for every level, but an independent beginner should read it as open sea with chop, swimmers, umbrellas, summer zoning, not a protected learning lagoon. Intermediates are the natural fit; advanced riders get freeride, bump-and-jump, the occasional wave or swell day.

Rescue

A medical centre and a rescue service are in town, and no independent kite-rescue boat was found.
2025: through the bathing season lifeguard cover on designated bathing areas is compulsory and continuous from 09:00 to 19:00 between the third Saturday in May and the third Sunday in September, with the Sicilian season running 1 May to 31 October; a beach operating without a lifeguard has to fly a red flag and post the multilingual warning. That cover belongs to the beach club or the municipality and is aimed at swimmers, so beyond the bathing zone you are on your own: the sea emergency call is 1530, free, or 112.

Launch

Sandy beach at the Tiki Beach club, Contrada 2° Scivolo, about 3 km from the centre of Pozzallo on the wide sandy coast. In July and August the lido fills with fixed straw umbrellas and sunbeds and the water in front fills with swimmers, so launch and land through the marked corridor and keep the lines clear of the beach furniture. The venue is a stabilimento with restaurant, pizzeria and bar; the phone is +39 0932 953425.

Hazards riders report 11

  • Beach umbrellas and sunbeds at the lido in peak season can catch lines.
  • Swimmers and other beach users are heavy in June, July and August.
  • Italian/Guardia Costiera nearshore restrictions require use of marked launch corridors during bathing hours/season.
  • Rocks and concrete are named as hazards for the Pozzallo coast generally; unconfirmed at the Tiki launch itself.
  • Scirocco can bring more chop, swell and gustier conditions.
  • fixed straw umbrellas and sunbeds at the lido in peak season, ready to catch lines
  • swimmers and beach users in June, July and August
  • the bathers' zone inside 200 m and the 300 m limit on craft, crossed only through a marked corridor during bathing hours
  • rocks and concrete named for the Pozzallo coast generally, unconfirmed at the Tiki launch itself
  • Scirocco brings more chop, bigger swell and gustier air
  • no kite rescue boat; lifeguard cover belongs to the beach and only during the season's guarded hours
Rules & access
2025: the Pozzallo coast guard bathing-safety ordinance. The sea inside 200 m of the coast, 100 m off steep coasts, is reserved for bathers during the bathing hours set by the Region, currently 09:00-19:00. Transit, stopping, mooring and anchoring by any craft, kitesurf and windsurf included, are prohibited within 300 m of the coast and 150 m of steep coasts, except through a compliant launch corridor. A kite corridor must be at least 40 m wide at the shoreline and at least 100 m wide at 100 m from shore, run perpendicular to the beach out to the 300 m limit, and be marked with orange or yellow buoys every 15 m for the first 100 m and every 50 m beyond, joined by non-floating lines; departure and return are by body drag out to 100 m from the shore. Corridors are installed by concession holders, or by the municipality on free beaches with a boat-parking area, and need prior authorization. Bathing season 1 May to 31 October 2025, lifeguard service compulsory 09:00-19:00 between the third Saturday of May and the third Sunday of September. Where marked, white buoys give the safe-water limit at 1.60 m of depth and red buoys the edge of the bathers' water. Check the current-year ordinance and the corridor's status at Tiki before riding.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Phone Tiki Beach or a local school before a summer session to check the corridor and whether lessons, rental or rescue are running that week.
  • On Ponente thermal days do not write the morning off; the wind usually fills late morning to midday and peaks in the afternoon.
  • In July and August rig well clear of the umbrellas and sunbeds, and cross the bathing zone only through the marked corridor.
  • Pack a 9 and a 12 for the usual range, plus something smaller if a strong Scirocco or a gradient day is forecast.
  • Take a car if you want to swap between Tiki, Santa Maria del Focallo and the other Ragusa-area beaches as the direction shifts.
  • On thermal days do not write the morning off; the wind usually fills late morning to midday and peaks in the afternoon.
  • You can stand for the first 80-100 m out, which makes water-starts and board recovery easier than the open-sea label suggests.
  • Read the buoys before you rig: white ones sit on the 1.60 m depth line, red ones on the outer edge of the swimmers' water.

Getting there

Airport

Catania-Fontanarossa Airport (CTA)

Route

Drive from Catania-Fontanarossa, about 113 km and an hour and a half on the E45 and SS115 toward Pozzallo; Tiki Beach is on Contrada 2° Scivolo, roughly 3 km from the town centre.Without a car, an AST bus runs from the airport to Pozzallo Viale Europa a few times a day for about 8-10 €, but you still need a bike or a long walk from town to the launch. Pozzallo also has year-round ferries to Valletta.

Staying

Stay in Pozzallo for town, beach clubs, restaurants and the ferry port, or use nearby Santa Maria del Focallo/Ispica for a quieter beach base. Accommodation exists near the spot, and dedicated camper areas/campsites are within a few kilometers rather than camping directly on Tiki Beach sand.

No-wind days

Pozzallo seafront and Torre Cabrera; the beaches at Pietre Nere and Raganzino; Modica and Ragusa, about 30 minutes by car; a fast-ferry day trip to Valletta; SUP, surf or windsurf when the schools are running them.
