On the clock

04:00 · 14:00 · 16:00 · 18:00 · 19:00

It builds through the late morning, peaks between 14:00 and 16:00, and drops away after 18:00-19:00. Winter is the exception: a set Maestrale holds through the night at a useful strength, with roughly one hour in eight over 12 kt even at 04:00. Indicative, no local measurement.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Punta Secca is a fishing hamlet of 519 residents on Sicily's southern Ragusa coast, better known as the village where Il commissario Montalbano was filmed than as a place to kite. For riders it is one thing only: a wave spot for experts.
Maestrale and Ponente build waves of 1 to 4 metres and come in cross-on; Levante and Scirocco cover the other side of the compass, so it reportedly works year-round with no month standing out.
The launch is a small sandy strip beside the fishing harbour, and the local rule is to move east of the harbour when the west side is breaking. Rocks, an offshore reef the locals call 'la Sicca' and the boats working the harbour are the hazard list.
There is no school, no rental and no rescue boat, and no knot range, water temperature or wetsuit call has been published for this beach. Come self-sufficient, on a Maestrale, and expect to share the village with tourists who have never heard of kitesurfing.

Character

synoptic

fills in: It builds through the late morning, peaks between 14:00 and 16:00, and drops away after 18:00-19:00. Winter is the exception: a set Maestrale holds through the night at a useful strength, with roughly one hour in eight over 12 kt even at 04:00. Indicative, no local measurement.

Typical strength

12-19 kt on a working day, with the hard Maestrale and Ponente days into the high twenties and a modelled five-year peak above 30 kt. About one hour in five clears 12 kt in March and April; June is the flattest month, at roughly one in forty. Indicative, no local measurement.

A wave spot for experienced riders, with one piece of standing local advice: ride east of the harbour when the western side has waves.
The wind-bearing stretch is November to May, peaking in March and April at about one hour in five over 12 kt. June to September is the flat part of the year, down to one hour in twenty or worse. 'Year-round' is about the spread of usable directions, not a steady supply of wind.
Indicative, no local measurement.

The quiver, in words

For a 75-85 kg rider: 11-12 m on a 13-16 kt Maestrale, 9 m at 18-20 kt, 7-8 m when the Ponente is properly on. This is wave terrain, so most riders go a size smaller here than they would on flat water. Indicative, derived from the modelled wind distribution; no published local kite range.

Direction to shore

The coast bends at the point. West of the harbour the shore faces roughly west-southwest, so Maestrale and Ponente arrive side-onshore and you go out on starboard tack into the wave.East of the harbour the same shoreline turns to face south-southwest and that wind becomes side-shore to side-offshore, which is why the standing advice is to move east when the west side is breaking. Levante and Scirocco reverse the arrangement.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The scene

What riders come here for

wavejumping
A fishing hamlet of 519 residents that fills with general tourists because Il commissario Montalbano was filmed here. No kite crowd or club has been found. The wave-only, expert-only, small-launch profile points to a handful of riders rather than a scene.

Rescue

Nothing is published. No lifeguard or safety boat has been found here, and no school or rental either; the working fishing harbour beside the launch is the only boat traffic. 1530 is the coastguard emergency number.
Come with another rider on the beach and treat it as self-rescue in wave terrain.

Launch

Sandy launch beside Punta Secca's small fishing harbour, on a shore that bends at the point: west of the harbour it faces roughly west-southwest, east of it south-southwest. The standing advice is to ride and launch east of the harbour when the western side is breaking, which makes the harbour-side beach the default access.

Rider tips

  • Ride and launch east of the harbour when the western side is breaking.
  • Come self-sufficient. Nothing is published on a school, rental or rescue at Punta Secca.
  • Treat it as expert-only wave terrain and stay off it if you are not already riding waves.
  • Without a car, take the Tumino bus from Ragusa or Comiso airport (CIY); the route runs through Punta Secca.
  • The wind months and the tourist months barely overlap: March and April carry the wind, July and August carry the crowds.
  • Water runs near 27 C in August and down to about 15.6 C in February, so the good wind months are full-suit months.

Getting there

Airport

Comiso Airport (CIY) is the nearest, about 19km from Ragusa town; a public Tumino bus route runs Ragusa – Marina di Ragusa – Casuzze – Punta Secca – Santa Croce Camerina – Aeroporto. Catania (CTA) is the larger alternative further away, unconfirmed for this route.

Route

Punta Secca is a coastal frazione of Santa Croce Camerina on Sicily's southern Ragusa coast, about 5.8 km from the main town by road. From Comiso airport it is 29 km on small roads, about 45 minutes by car; the Tumino bus route from Ragusa to the airport also runs through the village.
