3 spots

External renown — how known this place is in the kite world. Not a quality rating.

A quiet stretch of southeastern Sicily's Ragusa coast built on small fishing hamlets rather than resort infrastructure, anchored by Punta Secca — famous well beyond kiting circles as the fictional Vigata of the Montalbano TV series — plus Caucana/Kaukana and the working fishing port of Scoglitti.
It suits riders who want an authentic, low-key Sicilian base within easy reach of Ragusa's Baroque towns and Modica's chocolate, not those looking for beach-town nightlife.

Good to know before you go2

  • Kitesurfing is reportedly not permitted at Caucana during the summer bathing season — plan around that if travelling in peak season.
  • Punta Secca's launch works to the east of the harbour when the western side has waves — check which side is rideable before rigging.

The spots

  1. Punta Secca

    waves

Punta Secca is a fishing hamlet of 519 residents on Sicily's southern Ragusa coast, better known as the village where Il commissario Montalbano was filmed than as a place to kite.

The model here carries the month's average wind rather than a count of windy days: it reaches 13.1 kt in April, the strongest month it models for this spot.

Punta Secca: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Punta Secca

For riders it is one thing only: a wave spot for experts. Maestrale and Ponente build waves of 1 to 4 metres and come in cross-on; Levante and Scirocco cover the other side of the compass, so it reportedly works year-round with no month standing out. The launch is a small sandy strip beside the fishing harbour, and the local rule is to move east of the harbour when the west side is breaking. Rocks, an offshore reef the locals call 'la Sicca' and the boats working the harbour are the hazard list. There is no school, no rental and no rescue boat, and no knot range, water temperature or wetsuit call has been published for this beach. Come self-sufficient, on a Maestrale, and expect to share the village with tourists who have never heard of kitesurfing.

    Getting on the water

Sandy launch beside Punta Secca's small fishing harbour, on a shore that bends at the point: west of the harbour it faces roughly west-southwest, east of it south-southwest. The standing advice is to ride and launch east of the harbour when the western side is breaking, which makes the harbour-side beach the default access.

    If it goes wrong

Nothing is published. No lifeguard or safety boat has been found here, and no school or rental either; the working fishing harbour beside the launch is the only boat traffic. 1530 is the coastguard emergency number. Come with another rider on the beach and treat it as self-rescue in wave terrain.

  2. Caucana

Caucana, spelled Kaukana on some maps, is a broad sandy beach on the Santa Croce Camerina stretch of the Ragusa coast.

Caucana: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Caucana

It is a spring and autumn spot: you want SE Scirocco, and the water near shore is shallow and clear, reportedly out to about 30 m from the beach. There is parking, public showers and a beach bar. What decides your trip here is the calendar rather than the wind, because kiting is reportedly not allowed in summer during the bathing season, and Spiaggia Caucana appears in the 2026 Regione Siciliana bathing-season files as an official bathing-water polygon, so the summer beach use behind that ban is real. Rocks sit at the far end of the beach. Skip Caucana if you need a school on the sand and a marked corridor: the kite-specific evidence is thinner than at Scoglitti up the coast, and the launch corridor, the wind averages and any rescue cover are all unconfirmed.

    Getting on the water

Wide sandy beach. Parking, public showers and a beach bar are reported.

    If it goes wrong

Nothing on the sand: no lifeguard post, patrol or rescue craft has been documented at Caucana, and the school that lists the spot is based well down the coast. A sea emergency goes to the Coast Guard on the free 1530 blue number, or 112. That is national cover, not a local service, and it is what you are relying on here.

    Rules and access

2026: kitesurfing at Caucana is not allowed in summer because of the bathing season. Spiaggia Caucana appears in the 2026 Regione Siciliana bathing-season files as an official bathing-water polygon, but no Caucana-specific kite corridor or municipal kite ordinance was found.

Scoglitti: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Scoglitti

Sand, flat water, chop, small waves, a medium launch area, no tide to work around. Two winds do the work: Maestrale comes onshore and builds the waves, which is expert territory, and Scirocco comes in side-shore over flatter water for freestyle and freeride. Behind the pier the water goes very flat in southerly wind. Winter northerlies and northwesterlies put proper shape into the waves; summer Scirocco blows warm and side-on. The pier and the harbour are the obvious hazards, and other beach users are the other one in June, July, August. Official 2026 regional bathing-season files list monitored bathing beaches around Scoglitti and mark Porto di Scoglitti as a 650 m non-bathing harbour stretch, so launching anywhere near the port needs local care.

    Getting on the water

Sandy beach with a medium-sized launch and landing area. Scoglitti has large beaches on both sides of town, and the right-hand, downwind one by the harbour is where the tourists and the beach bars are.

    If it goes wrong

No kite-specific rescue. Lifeguard cover follows the Sicilian bathing season: between the third Saturday of May and the third Sunday of September, coast designated for bathing must be guarded from 09:00 to 19:00 without a break, and a beach concession posts one qualified lifeguard per 80 m of its sea frontage. On free beaches the comune either runs the service or has to sign that it does not, so read the boards before you rig. Sea emergency 1530; Capitaneria di Porto Pozzallo 0932 953327.

    Rules and access

2026: Regione Siciliana bathing-season files list Baia Dorica and the neighbouring Vittoria beaches as monitored bathing-water stretches, and Porto di Scoglitti as a 650 m non-bathing harbour area. 2025: the Pozzallo Coast Guard bathing-safety ordinance (n. 38 of 17 May 2025) covers the whole Vittoria and Acate coast. It names kite-surf among the craft barred from transiting, stopping, mooring or anchoring within 300 m of the shore, the one exception being a properly signposted launch corridor. The 200 m band off the beach is reserved for swimmers during bathing hours, 09:00 to 19:00 at the time of the ordinance. A corridor used by kites has to be at least 40 m wide at the sand and at least 100 m wide 100 m out, and the rule is to body-drag in and out to that 100 m mark. Bathing is banned all year inside Porto di Scoglitti and within 100 m of the moles and other harbour structures. Comuni may install corridors on free beaches; no corridor was found posted at Scoglitti, and the 2026 edition of the Pozzallo ordinance was not located.

History & trivia

Scene & life

  • Punta Secca's fictional fame as Vigata, the setting of Il commissario Montalbano, has made the small village square and Salvo Montalbano's TV house a genuine pilgrimage stop for fans of the series.
  • Scoglitti was a landing site for Anglo-American forces during Operation Husky on 9-10 July 1943, the invasion that opened the Italian campaign of WWII.
  • Santa Croce Camerina descends from the ancient Greek colony of Kamarina, founded in 598 BCE and referenced by Pindar, Herodotus and Thucydides.

Itinerary idea

Base near Punta Secca or in Scoglitti for the coast, and budget a day each for Ragusa Ibla and Modica — both are close, Baroque, and worth the detour regardless of wind.
