Good to know before you go2
- The reliable kite evidence for 'Alimini' points to the sea beach and the Serra Alimini/Frassanito area rather than the protected lakes themselves — don't expect to launch inside the lake nature reserve.
- This stretch has no dense public transport between villages; without a car you're limited to whichever single beach town you're staying in.
The spots
Alimini
Alimini is a kite listing north of Otranto, and the first thing to settle is where you actually ride: the sea beach and the Serra Alimini / Frassanito stretch, not inside the protected lakes.

The model here carries the month's average wind rather than a count of windy days: it reaches 13.7 kt in January, the strongest month it models for this spot.
Alimini: the long version, the launch and the rules
More on Alimini
The beach itself is shallow with small waves breaking on a sandbar, tide-independent, with a medium launch area, and it is the gentle end of this coast. Frassanito along the same shore is the other end: rocks on the beach and on the seabed, a reef, little beach space, and wave conditions for experienced riders only. May to September is the named season for the Lecce coast, which is also when the sun chairs and the beachgoers arrive on the Alimini sand. The twin lakes are a protected natural area, so vegetation, dunes and the lake shores stay off-limits unless a local operator confirms otherwise. Before you follow anybody's directions, make them tell you which of the three places they mean.
Getting on the water
Long sandy sea beach in the Alimini / Serra Alimini area north of Otranto, with kite activity also documented around Frassanito and the VOI Alimini watersports area.
If it goes wrong
There is no kite rescue at Alimini, and at nearby Frassanito rescue is explicitly not guaranteed. Schools and rental operators are held directly responsible for the safety of the gear they hand out and must carry third-party cover extended to the user, which is the only formal safety net on this stretch; an independent rider has none. At sea the emergency numbers are 1530 and 112.
Rules and access
2026: kitesurfing here falls under the pleasure-craft regulation for the Otranto maritime district, which runs the coast from Squinzano to Castro and takes in the Alimini beaches. Riding is banned under 16. Every rider carries a line cutter, checks the quick release works and wears a flotation device whatever the distance from shore; lines are connected only at launch and disconnected on landing, and a kite left unattended must have one side of the wing disconnected and the lines fully wound on the bar. During the bathing season fixed by the Puglia bathing ordinance (Determinazione Dirigenziale n. 215 of 15 April 2026) it is prohibited to ride within 400 m of beaches and low rocks, or 300 m of cliffs, and never beyond one mile out; the swimming strip may only be crossed through an authorised launch corridor. A corridor is 30 m wide at the waterline, widens to 80 m at 100 m out and holds that width for a further 100 m, is edged by orange buoys at most 20 m apart, and ends at 200 m with a black buoy marked CORRIDOIO RISERVATO AI KITESURF plus a sign at the water's edge; 10 m yellow-buoyed buffer strips run down each side of the outer section. Inside the corridor you body-drag the first 100 m, one rider at a time, and the rider coming in has right of way; the corridor is for launching and landing only, not for riding. Between two kites the upwind rider raises the kite and gives way. Ports, harbour mouths and their approach lanes are off limits. 2026: no Alimini-specific municipal corridor is published, so check which corridor is actually buoyed and signed before you rig.
San Foca
San Foca works when the wind comes from the north.

San Foca: the long version, the launch and the rules
More on San Foca
Tramontana from the north and Maestrale from the northwest are the two that fill this stretch of Salento's Adriatic coast north of Otranto, and the Otranto Channel funnels them, so it blows harder here than the map suggests: 13-22 knots in summer, up to about 30 in winter. A rare ESE thermal at 15-20 knots also turns up in summer. Sea state swings hard with direction, wavy to very wavy in Tramontana, almost flat with Maestrale or the ESE thermal. The beach is narrow, there are stones on the sand and on the bottom, rocks to the left and the harbour mole to the right, and no rescue is guaranteed, which is why nobody sends a beginner here. There is no bay to catch you either: go downwind without the skill to come back and you keep going. The beach-start season is September-May in practice; from June to August the bathers, the parking and what little usable sand is left make it a spot you check locally before unpacking. Torre Specchia next door is part of the same conversation on a northern forecast.
Getting on the water
Sandy but narrow beach on the San Foca - Torre Specchia stretch, near the harbour/mole end of San Foca and close to the Le Cesine direction.
If it goes wrong
No rescue or recovery service is guaranteed.
Rules and access
2026: Regione Puglia approved the regional bathing ordinance with Determinazione Dirigenziale n. 215 of 15 April 2026, covering bathing-season use of the maritime domain and coastal tourist and recreational areas. No San Foca kite corridor or municipal launch authorization for 2026 is published. Summer here is crowded and not always safe or legal to ride, so check current Melendugno and San Foca signage, corridors and Guardia Costiera rules before launching.

What riders say
8 recurring claims
From mid-June to mid-September this stretch is effectively closed to kites and the season riders actually use runs from late September round to June. It is stated flatly and repeatedly, over more than a decade, and nobody argues with the dates.
consensus×4 riders
August crowding draws the hardest language on this coast: Alimini and the roads around it come out as impassable, beaches and streets full, worse than a Romagna resort in high season.
consensus×4 riders
The campsite sitting directly on the Frassanito spot has a reputation for a loud permanent-party crowd and fills from the first days of August; the alternative for anyone travelling with children is the quieter camper area about a kilometre away.
consensus×4 riders
North and northwest are the working directions on this Adriatic side, tramontana is the best of them, and Frassanito is the pick because the coastline squeezes the wind there - which is also why the sand is gustier than the water.
majority×3 riders
Frassanito runs choppier with real waves, and the standard fix when it is too much is to drop downwind toward the Alimini side, which sits flatter. That downwind relationship is the practical reason to know both names rather than one.
majority×3 riders
Where riding is possible in the season it happens through a marked corridor at a paying lido, not off a free beach, and the parking that exists is paid and not especially close to the water.
majority×3 riders
The look of the place gets consistently good marks - clear water, dune-backed beaches, the Caribbean comparison turns up more than once - and the flip side is stated in the same breath: everyone else noticed too, and Otranto in summer is a tourist town first.
majority×3 riders
San Foca is small and the sand is poor. Roughly 300 metres of beach between rocks on one side and the harbour mole on the other, it puts up the best waves of the group with northerlies, and the beach is the worst of the three - dirty, full of broken shells, fine for kiting and no good for a family day.

Scene & life
- Salento seafood — San Foca is a working fishing village, so fresh-catch restaurants are the local strength
- Tavole di San Giuseppe (Saint Joseph's table), a Salento tradition around the March feast, marked in Otranto
- Otranto's Norman cathedral (1080–1088, with a 12th-century mosaic floor) and its Aragonese castle (1485–1498)
- the Alimini lakes — brackish coastal lakes with migratory birds, marsh orchids and protected wetland status, good for a walk or paddle on a no-wind day
- Baia dei Turchi, a foot-access-only beach near Otranto
- Torre dell'Orso and Sant'Andrea's rock-formation beaches south of San Foca
- the Roca Vecchia archaeological site and grottoes
- Lecce, Salento's baroque city, for a day of architecture and shopping
History & trivia
- Otranto is Italy's easternmost municipality; in 1480 roughly 800 male residents were beheaded by Ottoman forces for refusing to convert, an event still commemorated locally as the Martyrs of Otranto.
- The Alimini lakes take their name from the ancient Greek/Byzantine word límnē, meaning lake or wetland.

FAQ
Is Alimini suitable for beginners?
Yes - the sea-beach stretch north of Otranto, rather than the protected lakes, is shallow with small waves and rated for any level, in tide-independent conditions.
What's the wind like at San Foca?
It works best with Tramontana from the north and Maestrale from the northwest, with a rare easterly-to-southeasterly summer thermal also occasionally rideable.
Are there restrictions at Alimini?
Kiting is documented on the open sea beach rather than inside the protected Alimini lakes.
