The spot

Trou d'Eau Douce is an east-coast Mauritius spot on a large reef-protected lagoon in front of the village and out toward Ile aux Cerfs.

Riding

The everyday riding is shallow lagoon water, flat to choppy depending on the wind. Joyride, the section people actually come for, is a boat mission: get dropped at Ile aux Cerfs or Ilot Mangenie, then ride upwind to a very flat strip just inside the reef surf.

Season

June to October is the defensible season, with broader Mauritius reporting stretching useful trade wind into April-May and November.

Wind and conditions

East to south-east trades reach this coast side-on to onshore, so the first metres off the village beach need control, with houses, rocks and anchored boats behind you. The lagoon suits beginners through advanced riders, but low tide, coral, two iron poles, a wire-mesh section and the reef pass upwind all argue for a briefing before your first session.

The only official Trou d'Eau Douce regulation found, from 2008, covers pleasure-craft prohibited and speed-limit zones rather than kites.

No public kite rescue is confirmed. Boat and shuttle access exists for Ile aux Cerfs and Joyride, but that is not a standing rescue service for independent riders.

Launch

Access is the public beach and point at the village end of the bay, on the side toward Palmar and Belle Mare. The beach is fairly narrow but usable, best in front of the public beach in side-on wind.Rocks on the public beach make launching tricky, and the northern side of it has the better space. Joyride is normally approached by boat to Ile aux Cerfs or Ilot Mangenie, then an upwind ride.

2026: Tourism Authority GN 39/2008 still applies at Trou d'Eau Douce. It creates a prohibited activity zone between Ilot Mangenie and Ile aux Cerfs where no person shall operate a pleasure craft, plus 10-knot speed-limit zones for pleasure craft. No kite-specific Trou d'Eau Douce rule or kite corridor is published.

Read the tide first; stay off unfamiliar shallow reef at low water.
Ask a local rider or a boat operator to point out the two iron poles and the wire-mesh section before you launch from the village beach.
Treat Joyride as a boat-assisted session from Ile aux Cerfs or Ilot Mangenie, not a casual reach out of the village.
Give the excursion boats and the anchored fishing boats a wide berth; their lines are in the water too.
Wear reef booties if you are learning or expect to walk in shallow coral.
