The spot

Cap Malheureux sits at the northern tip of Mauritius, on a flat lagoon with the northern islands on the horizon.

Where to kite

The pretty public beach by the red-roof church is the wrong place to kite: boats everywhere, wind shadow and barely room to lay out a kite. Riders use the more open bay and long sand and grass launch a short walk away instead.

Season and conditions

The season is the winter trade wind, June to October above all, and the north is less reliable than the south and southwest all year. Call it intermediate to advanced. Low tide leaves the lagoon shallow and rocky, anchored and moving boats are constant, fishing lines run off them, and currents and reef hazards are reported. When wind and tide line up, the payoff is smooth flat water for freeride and freestyle rather than a full-service beginner lagoon.

Direction to shore

Side-on in the southeast trade. At the cape itself the same trade can run cross to slightly offshore depending on which launch you use, while an easterly comes in side-shore along the beach. Read the angle where you are standing before committing to a long reach out toward the reef.

Dominant direction

SE trade wind is the dominant, reliable direction (side-on-shore), blowing in the June-October core season; NE, ENE, E and ESE are also workable. West-to-northwest and southwest winds occur only rarely as a secondary option, not as the primary setup.

The Beach Authority Act, current through its 2024 amendments, lets the Authority regulate activities and user safety on public beaches, and the Tourism Authority licenses tourist enterprises, pleasure craft and skippers. Ask locals or the authorities before using informal or private-estate access.

Check the tide first and skip low water unless a local confirms there is depth on the line you want to ride.
If the chapel bay is full of anchored boats, walk the 100-200 m around or past the rocky point and launch there.
Ask local riders to point out the rocky bar, the reef passes and the channels before you launch.
Give fishing boats a wide berth: rods, hand lines and trolling lines are common around Mauritius.
If you are learning or want more room, ride Anse la Raie instead of forcing a session here.
Bring reef shoes or other protective footwear for walking in the shallows.
Rinse the gear at the fresh-water points by the beach. Free parking, public toilets and a few small restaurants are the whole of the infrastructure.
Sizing for 75-85 kg: a 9-11 m covers the ordinary June-October day, a 12-14 m the lighter mornings, a 7-9 m when it is over 23 kt.

Route

Drive north from the airport and Port Louis area on the M2 and the coast roads toward Grand Baie and Cap Malheureux; park near the red-roof church and walk slightly north to the spot. Public buses run from Grand Baie, though route and timetable details are unconfirmed.

Transfer

About 75-90 minutes by road from MRU in normal conditions, over roughly 65-70 km of road; traffic varies.
