Vatha, the bay everyone calls Devil's Bay, is the northernmost and largest of the three bays that make up the Kipi Afiartis windsurf and kite area on southern Karpathos, and it hosted the 2009 ISWC Windsurf Speed World Championship.

Wind conditions

The Meltemi arrives here roughly one to two Beaufort stronger than in the bays south of it, funneled by a venturi effect through the channel between Crete and Karpathos, with gusts reported beyond 45 knots on the strongest days. Close to shore the water runs comparatively flat, then builds into chop and swell further out. The wind is side-offshore, NNW to NW, so a failure carries a rider out to sea, which is why the centres sharing the beach run safety boats.

Beach and conditions

The bottom is coarse sand mixed with pebbles and rock and the beach carries little more than a scatter of sunbeds. This is a working bay for experienced riders, not a resort beach, and both locals and schools send beginners to the calmer bays a five-to-ten-minute walk south.

Wind is close to guaranteed through the June-September peak. Check one thing before you book: kites are barred from all three Afiartis bays between 09:30 and 18:00 while the windsurf centres are open (2026).

Safety boats are run by the two Afiartis centres at the middle and southern bays, with GPS trackers offered, and the water is watched by their team. Cover for riders who are not centre clients was not confirmed, and there is no public lifeguard service on this beach.

2026: kitesurfing is not allowed in any of the three Afiartis bays, Vatha included, during the windsurf centres' opening hours of 09:30 to 18:00, on safety grounds; kiting is tolerated on the other side of the island, about half an hour's drive away.

The Rule and Its Source

That is a station rule enforced by the operators who hold the beach concession, not a published municipal ordinance, and no municipal or Port Police text specific to Afiartis was found. The centres' 2026 season ran 15 May to 12 October.

National Rules

Greek national kitesurf rules apply regardless: nothing before sunrise or after sunset, nothing in adverse weather, nothing beyond 1 nautical mile offshore, a 200 m stand-off from swimmers, anchored boats, rocks, reefs, islets and buoys, a clear 100 m radius to launch, operators required to keep two CPR-trained staff and a rescue boat on site, and no riding above 6 Beaufort unless licensed lifeguards and a motorised rescue craft are present.

Not the bay to learn on: build the skills at Agrilaopotamos, Gun Bay or Chicken Bay/Makris Gialos first.
Check before you travel, because kiting is off-limits in all three Afiartis bays during the windsurf centres' 09:30-18:00 opening hours and kiters are pointed to the other side of the island.
Read the rigged sail sizes rather than the forecast: 3.5-4.2 m2 here puts a 75-85 kg kiter on 6-9 m and often less, and the venturi effect regularly pushes 25-40kt with higher gusts.
Do not ride here without a boat watching or someone on shore; the wind comes off the land from the left, so a downwind failure takes you away from the beach.
Walk the 800m, 5-10 min along the coast, to the staffed centres at the other Afiartis bays; the airport runway a few hundred metres behind you makes the transfer trivial and the beach loud.
Get the bay names straight before you ask directions: Gun Bay is the middle beach, also called big Makris Gialos, and the small southern beach is Chicken Bay or small Makris Gialos.

Afiartis is about 12 km south of Pigadia and roughly 500 m from Karpathos island national airport, so the transfer is minutes rather than an hour and the centres are signposted from the road. A car or scooter is worth having: the three bays are strung along the coast and Pigadia is the nearest town for supplies.
