Wissant sits in a wide bay on the Côte d'Opale, cupped between the chalk headlands of Cap Blanc-Nez and Cap Gris-Nez on the English Channel. Frequent, reliable wind has long made it a magnet for windsurfers and kitesurfers - locals call it the 'Mecca' of wind sports on this coast - and at low tide the beach opens into a huge expanse of hard sand.
