On the clock

14:00 · 16:00 · 18:00

Nothing much before late morning. The breeze builds from around midday, is at its best between 14:00 and 16:00, and falls away after 18:00. Modelled diurnal pattern rather than a beach log.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Zapponeta rides at Ippocampo, on the beach 6 km north of town up the coast road, where the sand is dark and ferrous. It is a freeride and slalom beach with a thermal that fills in the early afternoon, best under sunny high pressure, and it also works in the other common directions.
The summer wind is east to south-easterly, May through September. Water is flat to chop with small waves. Set against Margherita di Savoia or Lido dei Pini, almost nothing is published here about launch space, rescue, crowd or kite-specific rules, and that gap is the reason to turn up with a plan of your own.
Intermediate riders and up on this stretch of the Gargano coast; nobody has documented teaching at Zapponeta itself. Summer riders need to check the active bathing zone and any authorized corridor before rigging.

fills in: Nothing much before late morning. The breeze builds from around midday, is at its best between 14:00 and 16:00, and falls away after 18:00. Modelled diurnal pattern rather than a beach log.

Typical strength

A light summer sea breeze: afternoons usually run 8-14 knots and 15 knots or more is uncommon between June and September. The strong days on this coast fall outside the kite season, in the cold months, on south-westerly and northerly synoptic wind. Indicative figures from regional statistics and modelled coastal data; there is no beach measurement.

May through September is the season riders use, and it runs on an afternoon sea breeze rather than on synoptic wind. July and August are among the lightest months of the year for average speed even though the breeze is at its most regular then; the windiest months on the statistics are November to January, outside the warm-water window.
Indicative, from regional statistics and modelled data rather than a beach record.

The quiver, in words

For a 75-85 kg rider the summer thermal is a 15 m job most afternoons, with a 12 m on the better days and a 17 m or a light-wind foil setup for the soft ones. A 9-10 m only makes sense on the rare strong day, which is usually not in summer.Indicative, worked from the wind range rather than from rider reports here.

Direction to shore

The E to SE summer thermal should be side-on to onshore along the Ippocampo and Zapponeta sector; the exact angle at the launch is undocumented.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Rescue

No kite-specific rescue, safety boat or patrol is documented for this beach. From 23 May to 13 September 2026 every beach concession and serviced free beach in Puglia has to run a rescue and lifeguard service, with a first-aid point holding oxygen, a spine board and a defibrillator; the open sand away from those concessions has none of it, and neither does the whole of the cold season.
Sea emergencies go to the Coast Guard on 1530, land emergencies on 112. Plan on self-rescue and a buddy.

Launch

The launch is at the beach at Ippocampo, reached by the coast road 6 km north from Zapponeta; the coast is ferrous/dark sand.

Hazards riders report 2

  • Bathing-season restrictions inside the first 200 m from the sandy coast unless using authorized corridors
  • Launch/rescue details unconfirmed
Rules & access
2026: from 23 May to 13 September, 24 hours a day, the sea within 200 m of low sandy shore is reserved for bathing across Puglia unless the maritime authority sets a different local limit. Launch corridors through that band are the coastal municipality's duty to set up and maintain, following the maritime authority's own ordinance; concession holders may run a corridor for the activities their licence covers. No corridor for Zapponeta or Ippocampo has been published, and the municipality's own site carries no beach ordinance. Lifeguard and rescue cover is mandatory at concessions for the whole bathing season.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Aim for sunny high-pressure afternoons, since the thermal is an afternoon wind.
  • Take the coast road 6 km north from Zapponeta to Ippocampo and confirm the access point locally before you rig.
  • Ask about the corridor first: from 23 May to 13 September the first 200 m off the sand is bathing water.
  • Come self-sufficient. No rescue or school cover is confirmed for this beach.

Getting there

Airport

Foggia Gino Lisa (FOG) is closest; Bari Karol Wojtyla (BRI) is another practical airport.

Route

Use the coast road from Zapponeta toward Ippocampo; Zapponeta has no railway station, so onward travel from rail/airport generally requires car, taxi or infrequent bus.

There is accommodation around Zapponeta, Ippocampo and Manfredonia; nothing kite-specific is confirmed.

No-wind days
