Torre Mileto is a long open Adriatic beach on the north side of the Gargano in Puglia, near San Nicandro Garganico, shallow over sand, with a wind that changes character with the season. The thermal comes in sideshore from roughly May to October at 10-25 knots, and those are the days to use if you are still learning.
Tramontana and the other north setups run 15-50 knots, Libeccio 18-40 knots side-offshore; both are expert conditions, for the power, the open exposure, the side-off angle and a coastal current nobody has mapped. Water is flat, choppy or up to about 3 m of wave depending on direction. Off season it empties.
September to May you can have the whole beach to yourself, which is half the appeal and half the risk: no rescue service is confirmed, and hospitality at the beach is reportedly one hotel, one campsite and two restaurants. Bring what you need and read the posted bathing-season rules before rigging, because no Torre Mileto kite corridor is on record. Vieste and Scialmarino, further east, are the developed alternative.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Type

sea

Standing depth

Shallow. The Torre Mileto coast is long sandy beach with low seabeds.

Tides

Kitesurfing conditions do not depend on tide.

Temperature

Summer About 22-26 C average in July-August, with summer range reported roughly 18-29 C.

Winter About 13 C average in February; winter range reported roughly 11-18 C.

Wetsuit

Lycra or shorts in high summer: May-September air runs 20-38 C. October-May you want a wetsuit.

Currents

Coastal current runs along this open Adriatic shore in strong wind. No detailed current map exists.

12–29°C water
Open Adriatic sandy beach: flat water, chop, small waves or medium waves depending on the wind, with waves reportedly reaching about 3 m on the right direction. It is exposed, and outside summer it feels remote.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
It depends on the day, not on the spot. Moderate thermal, especially as it eases, works for beginners; Libeccio and north-wind sessions are expert only. The ratings for this beach run from entry through intermediate to advanced, which is why the rating on its own tells you little.

Rescue

No lifeguard post and no rescue boat is confirmed anywhere on this beach. Bathing-season cover, 23 May to 13 September 2026, falls on the beach concessions, and almost all of the roughly 10 km of sand here is free beach with nothing on it. Sea emergencies go to the coast guard on 1530, free and answered around the clock.
Rig with somebody who can call it in.

Hazards riders report 10

  • Strong north-wind and Libeccio sessions are for experts
  • Remote/desolate beach
  • North-wind and Libeccio sessions can exceed 40 knots and are for experts.
  • Libeccio is side-offshore.
  • Open Adriatic exposure and possible coastal current in strong wind.
  • Remote/desolate beach outside the main summer season.
  • No rescue service on record.
  • Waves can build up to about 3 m depending on wind direction.
  • No lifeguard post on the free beach: the 23 May-13 September 2026 bathing-season cover is an obligation of the concessions, not of the open sand.
  • The first 200 m of water is reserved for bathing through the 2026 season unless a launch corridor is laid.
Rules & access
2026: the Puglia regional bathing ordinance, Determinazione n. 215 of 15 April 2026, sets the bathing season from 23 May to 13 September 2026 and reserves the sea out to 200 m from beaches and low rocks for bathing, 24 hours a day, unless the competent maritime authority fixes different limits. Launch corridors through that band are laid and maintained by the coastal municipality under the maritime authority's own ordinance, and may also be laid by concession holders for their rental and sporting activities; without a corridor you are crossing a strip reserved for swimmers. Driving or parking on the demanio beach, camping, fires and stoves are prohibited, and gear left out overnight on free beach is not allowed. No San Nicandro Garganico or maritime-authority act naming a Torre Mileto kite corridor was found, so read the posted signs and ask locally before rigging.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Ride the 10-25 knot thermal for progression, and leave the 15-50 knot north days and Libeccio to expert riders.
  • Do not go out in Libeccio without a self-rescue plan; it blows side-offshore off an open coast.
  • Pack from 20 m down to 7 m if you are staying a week, because that is the range used here.
  • Read the posted bathing-season signs before you pump, since no Torre Mileto kite corridor is on record.
  • If it is your first session in the area, look at the foce del Lago di Lesina before committing to Torre Mileto.
  • Save 1530 in your phone before the first session; it is the Italian sea-emergency line and there is nobody on this beach to shout at.
  • Between 23 May and 13 September the first 200 m of water belongs to swimmers unless a marked corridor says otherwise.

Getting there

Airport

Bari Karol Wojtyla (BRI) or Foggia Gino Lisa for limited service; San Domino Island is geographically closer but not a practical main kite-travel airport.

Route

By car: A14 exit Poggio Imperiale, continue toward Vieste, take the San Nicandro Garganico exit and follow the signs for Lido Torre Mileto on the coastal road. Buses reach the Torre Mileto stop area, but not with kite gear.

Transfer

Plan 2-2.5 hours by car from Bari airport. The exact timed transfer is unconfirmed.

Staying

Hospitality at the beach is thin: reportedly one hotel, one campsite and two restaurants. Everything else is in San Nicandro Garganico, Lesina, Rodi Garganico, Peschici, Vieste.

No-wind days

Torre Mileto tower and beaches, Lago di Lesina and Lago di Varano, Tremiti Islands trips from the Gargano coast, Rodi Garganico/Peschici/Vieste, Gargano National Park and Foresta Umbra.
