Brouwersdam before you go: two sets of rules

Two municipalities share the dam. One bans kites on stretches of its North Sea beach, the other zones its side for extreme sports. Four directions work.

Brouwersdam is 6.5 km of dam with a road down the middle, and the two ends sit in different municipalities. Goeree-Overflakkee's beach designation, adopted 11 July 2023 and in force from 19 July 2023, bans kitesurfing and kiteboards on the North Sea beach between kilometre marker 3.00 and beach access 7, and again between beach access 9 and the Schouwen-Duiveland boundary.

Over that boundary the rules invert: Brouwersdam 2 is the beach designated for extreme sports including kitesurfing, buggy kiting and stunt kites, while Brouwersdam 1 is reserved for surfing, banana boats, ring towing and waterskiing. What is legal changes as you drive.

Worse, the permitted stretches on the Goeree-Overflakkee side live on maps annexed to the decision as images rather than in the text of it, so nobody can tell you over the phone where the line falls. Read the boards where you park.

Inside whatever is open, riding is confined to the water between the yellow buoys, and inside that sits a deep-water zone for kitefoils, posted in Dutch as "Hier niet met je twintip varen of opstappen!" Do not ride or launch a twin-tip there.

Four directions work and they pick your bank

N, NW, W, SW. Everything else is offshore on one bank or the other, whichever side you choose, and that is the whole reason 6.5 km of launches exists. Direction also sets the number. Southwest usually gives 15-25 kt on the north lake side and rides for all comers.

West runs 18-28 kt on the north sea side and is an advanced day. Northwest at 20 kt and up turns the sea side into a wave spot. There is no thermal here. The wind is frontal, so it blows all day or it does not blow, and locals check a forecast rather than a clock.

The season is not the summer you would guess. Oostvoornse Meer is the deep lake at the Rotterdam end of this destination, and the only one of its spots the wind model covers.

It gets 68 percent of December days and 61 percent of January days with three consecutive riding hours over 12 knots, against 26 percent in May and 44 percent in October, on 2023-2024 modelled data. The lake is 30 m deep and shared with divers, which is a different argument, but the seasonal shape is the coast's shape too.

The tide picks your water, not the forecast

On the inner Grevelingenmeer side you get roughly 100 m of shallow flat water with a 100 m beach uncovered at low tide, and spring tides turn it mirror-smooth. That is the freestyle window worth timing a trip around.

The sea side runs the other way: flattest at low water, then waves as the tide fills, with tidal current of 2-3 kt along the dam and past the outlet sluice on a spring tide. The southern sea-side zone carries the hardest ebb, and the sluice is a hard object with the water pointing at it. Never take the sea side alone on an ebbing tide.

Water is 18.3 C in summer and 6.3 C in winter, so a 4/3 mm covers April to early October and winter wants 5/4 to 6/5 mm with boots and a hood. Put shoes on for the shells, and for the submerged stones on the lake side at low water.

What you cannot rent at the dam

The big watersport centre at Ossenhoek 1 rents windsurf and wing gear, plus foils. No kites. No twin-tips, at any price point, which catches out anyone planning to fly with hand luggage. The one kite-set rental on the dam is Kiteschool Brouwersdam at Brouwersdam Buitenzijde 20a: a complete Duotone set at EUR 120 a day (2026), or EUR 499 (2026) for a 15-hour card.

Past four riding days that is dearer than flying your own quiver. If you do rent a foil, read the waiver: it costs EUR 5-65 (2026) depending on duration and caps liability at EUR 50 (2026) an incident, and foil damage is excluded from it entirely.

Lessons come at two prices for two different waters. An intro is EUR 99 (2026) for 3 hours with Kiteschool Brouwersdam on the seaward side, or EUR 115 (2026) for 3 hours with KBC on the lake side at Minicamping de Hoge Blok, Kuijerdamseweg 4 in Noordwelle.

The cheaper one teaches you in tidal water with current. KBC runs 30 March to 1 November 2026, with a kite camp from EUR 479 (2026) for 5 days.

Who should ride somewhere else

Beginners on the sea side. The shallow lake zones and the school zones are the beginner ground, and the rest of the dam is not. Ouddorp, a short drive west, is a separate advanced spot in deep water.

The kite area is the strip between beach entrances 7 and 9, the ebb off the Iloon pavilion at entrance 9 pulls hard, and stone breakwaters between entrances 8 and 7 surface at low tide. The offshore sandbank is a seal haul-out closed to kites.

Maasvlakte 2 - Slufter up the coast is advanced as well, with its southern boundary buoys moved about 200 m northeast after a September 2024 ecological study and access redirected through P3 while P4 was shut from 11 March 2025 to 30 January 2026.

Riders planning around a Dutch summer should also read Vrouwenpolder's clock before booking it as the backup. Under APV Veere 2026 the beach season runs 1 May to 15 September, and inside it kiting is prohibited between 10:00 and 19:00 anywhere outside the listed kite zones. Kitesurfing on the Veerse Meer behind the dam is prohibited outright.

Three claims that do not agree

Parking at the dam launches is listed as free in one place and as about EUR 5-7 a day (2026) in another, with the lots gone by 10:00 on windy weekends. Across 6.5 km of dam those are probably different car parks. Either way the scarcity is spaces, not euros.

The late-June festival on the dam road is dated 25-27 June 2026 in one place and 27 and 28 June 2026 in the organiser's own news, and that weekend fills the whole area. The water gets the same treatment. One description gives the inner side 100 m of shallow flat, while riders comparing 2026 gear lump Brouwersdam in with the choppy North Sea spots without saying which bank they rode.

Getting there, and the hospital that is not Zierikzee

  • There is no kite rescue boat on any of it.
  • The numbers are 112, the coastguard on 0900-0111, or VHF channel 16.
  • From Ouddorp the hospital is Van Weel-Bethesda in Dirksland, and it has an A&E. From Renesse it is ADRZ Goes, roughly an hour south.

Rotterdam The Hague to the dam is 52 km, about 42 minutes, EUR 9-14 (2026) of fuel. Without a car it is metro line D to Spijkenisse Centrum, then bus 104 to the Ouddorp, Port Zelande stop on the dam itself, about 3h16m for EUR 16-20 (2026); a taxi is EUR 170-210 (2026). Carless works and pins you to one launch, which defeats a spot whose point is moving with the wind.

Know which side you are on before you need to. From Ouddorp it is Van Weel-Bethesda in Dirksland, the only hospital on the island, and it has an A&E. From Renesse it is not Zierikzee, which is outpatient clinics only: the nearest 24/7 emergency department in the Netherlands' Zeeland province is ADRZ Goes, roughly an hour south.

There is no kite rescue boat on any of it. The KNRM station at Ouddorp is crewed around the clock, and the numbers are 112, the coastguard on 0900-0111, or VHF channel 16.
