Ouddorp faces the open North Sea at the western tip of Goeree-Overflakkee, and it rides nothing like the flat water people drive to Brouwersdam for. It is an official kitespot with deep water, tide, shorebreak and waves, and the safe directions are N, NW, W and NE.
The same Zeeland Delta weather that feeds Brouwersdam and Domburg arrives here with nothing in front of it. The kite area is a defined strip of sand between beach entrances 7 and 9, entrance 9 being the one by the Iloon pavilion, so find the signs before you unroll anything.
At low water the beach is wide; on an August afternoon at high water, with the holiday parks emptied onto the sand, the launch margin is a fraction of that. Confident intermediates and advanced riders get the most out of it, and a first-timer belongs on the Brouwersdam side with a school.
Spring and autumn are when the wind and the waves line up. Rescue cover for the kite zone is unconfirmed.

Character

synoptic

fills in: Frontal wind, so there is no daily switch-on. It arrives with the system, often blows through the night, and can be there at dawn or gone by noon. What sets the timing of your session here is the tide, not the hour. No local onset measurement.

Typical strength

Working range is roughly 15 to 30 kt, and the beach earns its advanced label at the top of it. The nearest open-coast measurements, 22 km up the coast at Hoek van Holland over 2015-2024, put the daily peak hourly mean at 17-18 kt from June to September and 20-22 kt from November to February, above 18 kt on half the days of the year. No measurement at Ouddorp itself: the weather station that once stood there is gone.

Frontal, weather-system wind. Sea air comes in cleaner than anything blowing off the land, and a strong onshore day comes with shorebreak.
Wind and waves are best outside peak summer, when Atlantic lows drive the North Sea; summer runs lighter and busier, though a passing front still delivers.
The nearest open-coast record shows the gradient plainly: daily peak hourly means of 17-18 kt from June to September against 20-22 kt from November to February, with the share of days over 18 kt falling from around 60 per cent in midwinter to under 40 per cent in late summer.

The quiver, in words

For a 75-85 kg rider on this coast: 11-12 m on a 15-17 kt day, 9 m around 20-22 kt, 7 m or smaller once an autumn front is over 25. Deep water and shorebreak both argue for the smaller of two choices. Indicative sizing derived from the wind range, not a published local table.

Direction to shore

N, NW, W and NE are the listed safe directions for the Ouddorp kitespot.

Dominant direction

SW-W-NW frontal wind is the normal strong-wind pattern on this part of the Dutch coast; N, NW, W and NE are the safe directions for Ouddorp.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

waves

Standing depth

No; the Ouddorp sea-side spot is deep water.

Tides

Tidal North Sea beach; beach width and shorebreak vary with tide.

Temperature

14-20°C summer · 5-8°C winter

Wetsuit

Shorty or thin fullsuit in warmer months; 4/3 to 5/4 fullsuit with cold-water accessories or drysuit in winter.

Currents

Tidal current runs along this coast and the ebb by the Iloon pavilion at entrance 9 is strong enough to be called out on its own. Add wave-driven current on a hard onshore day. Keep well clear of the Brouwersdam sluice and the beach groynes.

Your level

Rescue

VHF channel 16

Cover is the KNRM volunteer lifeboat station at Ouddorp, crewed around the clock and free to the person being rescued. The alarm goes to 112, or to the coastguard centre on 0900-0111, or by VHF channel 16. There is no KNRM summer lifeguard post on this beach; that service runs on the Wadden islands, not here.
The kite zone has a named spot manager for the national kitesurfing association, reachable at ouddorp@kitesurfvereniging.nl.

Launch

Wide sandy North Sea beach on the west side of Goeree-Overflakkee, near the dunes and Westhoofd lighthouse area.

Space

Large beach at lower tide, much less usable room at high water and on busy summer days.

Rules & access
2026: Ouddorp is an official kitespot for advanced riders, open all year, with safe wind directions N, NW, W and NE. The designated kite area is the strip of beach between beach entrances (opgang) 7 and 9, entrance 9 being the one near the Iloon beach pavilion. The offshore sandbank is a seal haul-out and is closed to kitesurfers. Ride inside the marked zone and stay out of the marked swimming areas.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Book lessons at the Brouwersdam schools; the open sea side at Ouddorp is not a first-lesson beach.
  • Check the tide before you rig, because the wide low-water beach turns into a thin launch margin at high water.
  • Stay inside the strip between beach entrances 7 and 9 and keep off the marked swimming zones in July and August.
  • Keep well clear of the Brouwersdam sluice and the beach groynes; that is where the current runs.
  • Look for the stone breakwaters between entrances 8 and 7. They surface at low tide and they are the reason not to ride that end blind.
  • The ebb by the Iloon pavilion at entrance 9 pulls hard. Set up upwind of it if you are on your own.
  • Leave the offshore sandbank alone. It is a seal haul-out and closed to kites.

FAQ

Is Ouddorp suitable for beginners?

No, NKV lists it for advanced riders only; beginners are better served by the flat-water lessons at nearby Brouwersdam.

What is the wind like at Ouddorp?

Wind is frontal and weather-system driven, with N, NW, W and NE marked as the safe directions and stronger periods typically outside peak summer.

When is the best time to kite Ouddorp?

Wind and waves are usually best in March-May and September-November, when Atlantic lows bring stronger North Sea wind; summer can still work but is lighter and busier.

What should I know about the water at Ouddorp?

It is a deep, tidal North Sea beach with shorebreak, so beach width and conditions change with the tide.
