When it fills in

Frontal, not thermal. The wind arrives with the system and can blow at any hour of the day or night, so it is a forecast spot. What decides the timing of your session is the tide, which sets how much beach and how many exposed groyne poles you have, not the clock.

Domburg and Westkapelle are two exposed Walcheren wave beaches on the Dutch North Sea coast, a few kilometers apart. Domburg is the one with a documented kite zone, at the beach entrance Noordduine, deep water, safe in N, NW and W. Westkapelle sits southwest of it under the sea dike and takes the bigger waves when the wind swings west.
Both are sand launches, and both come with groynes, shorebreak, moving tide and almost no standing depth to bail into. Treat it as intermediate to advanced wave riding. It is a bad place to learn.
Summer is the awkward part: beach use goes up and access rules tighten, and Westkapelle is where that bites hardest.

Character

synoptic

fills in: Frontal, not thermal. The wind arrives with the system and can blow at any hour of the day or night, so it is a forecast spot. What decides the timing of your session is the tide, which sets how much beach and how many exposed groyne poles you have, not the clock.

Typical strength

No station at either beach. The nearest long-run coastal record, at Vlissingen about 20 km south, averages 12 kt with mean gusts of 20 kt and WSW dominant; the sessions here are the frontal days that sit well above that average, which is why spring and autumn carry the season. Indicative, not a spot measurement.

Cleanest in onshore to cross-onshore North Sea wind. Outside the listed sea-wind directions it turns gusty or unsafe.
Passing lows drive the wave season on this coast, so spring and autumn give stronger wind and more swell than midsummer does.

The quiver, in words

Nothing published for either beach. Indicative for a 75-85 kg rider, sized from the regional coastal statistics: 9-12 m on the lighter frontal days, 7-9 m at 20-25 kt, 5-7 m when a low is properly through.Deep water and breaking waves argue for the smaller end of whatever you are between, since there is nowhere to stand and sort yourself out.

Direction to shore

Domburg: N, NW and W are the safe directions. At Westkapelle, SW through NW is described as workable.

Dominant direction

SW-W-NW frontal wind is the usable North Sea pattern here, and N, NW and W are the safe sector marked for Domburg.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

waves

Standing depth

None at the Domburg kitespot: it is deep water from close in. The groyne pole rows that mark these beaches submerge at high water, which removes the visual reference without removing the obstacle.

Tides

Tidal North Sea beach; beach width and shorebreak change with the tide.

Temperature

14-20°C summer · 5-8°C winter

Wetsuit

Shorty or thin fullsuit in summer; 4/3 to 5/4 fullsuit, hood/gloves/boots or drysuit in cold months.

Currents

Tidal current and wave-driven current possible on the exposed North Sea coast.

7–21°C water
The Domburg zone is deep-water North Sea wave riding with no standing area. Westkapelle is a sand-beach wave spot where the waves get big in westerly wind and rough water is normal.

Your level

not for beginners hereintermediateadvanced
Domburg is classed for intermediate and advanced riders. Westkapelle is rated intermediate and expert, and stays quieter than the resort beaches; deep water, waves, shorebreak and groynes rule it out for first lessons.

Rescue

VHF 16

Better than most exposed North Sea beaches, and still not a safety net. A volunteer lifeboat station sits at Westkapelle, callable around the clock and free of charge; you reach it through 112, through the coastguard centre on 0900-0111, or on VHF 16. Municipal beach guards cover the Veere beaches only in season: weekends and public holidays 12:00-17:00 from 2 May to 25 June 2026, daily 11:00-19:00 from 29 June to 30 August, weekends 12:00-17:00 through September.
They are linked to the ambulance control room, so a 112 call brings the beach guard, the ambulance and the lifeboat together. Outside those windows the beach is empty, which is exactly when the wave season runs. A kitesurfer was taken off this stretch by lifeboat in 2014 after a rig fouled a groyne.

Launch

Sand launch on the North Sea beach at Domburg, with designated access at beach entrance Noordduine, and a separate wave area at Westkapelle by the sea dike.

Space

Wide sand at lower tide. High tide and summer crowds shrink it.

Hazards riders report 12

  • wave breakers/groynes roughly every 150m at Domburg
  • large waves at Westkapelle in westerly swell
  • gusty conditions when wind moves past WSW or SE
  • Groynes and wave breakers along the Walcheren beaches
  • Deep water at the Domburg kitespot
  • Shorebreak and breaking waves
  • Large surf at Westkapelle in westerly swell
  • Tidal current
  • Busy summer beach use
  • Groyne pole rows submerge at high water and disappear from view
  • Strong current combined with the pole rows, the reason the spot is marked for very experienced riders only
  • No beach guard outside the May-September season, which is when the best wave conditions run
Rules & access
2026: the Veere bathing season runs 1 May to 15 September, and during it flying a kite from the beach is prohibited between 10:00 and 19:00. The published season rules cover kite-flying and do not name kitesurfing separately, so read the signs at the beach entrance rather than assuming. Domburg is listed as an official kitespot at the Noordduine beach entrance, safe directions N, NW and W, paid parking, shared with wave riders and windsurfers. At Westkapelle kitesurfing is reported as prohibited in summer from 10:00 to 19:00 but tolerated when there is room and swimmers are kept clear; that is a tolerance, not a written exemption, and it can end on any given day.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Plan your line before you go out at Domburg; the wave breakers sit roughly every 150m.
  • Go to Westkapelle when the swell is westerly, that is where the size is.
  • Check the current spot rules and the beach signs before launching, because summer access and tolerated zones change.
  • Ride these two in sea wind only. Offshore or side-off leaves no margin, the water gets deep fast.
  • At Westkapelle keep extra downwind room when westerly swell is running, because the waves and the shorebreak build quickly.
  • Note where the pole rows are at low water; at high water they are under the surface and still there.
  • In the wave season, from October to April, there is no beach guard on duty. The lifeboat still is: 112, or VHF 16.

FAQ

Is Domburg / Westkapelle suitable for beginners?

No, NKV classifies Domburg for intermediate and advanced riders, and the deep water, waves, shorebreak and groynes at both spots make them unsuitable for first lessons.

What is the wind like?

N, NW and W are listed as the safe directions at Domburg, driven mainly by North Sea frontal systems that are typically stronger in spring and autumn than midsummer.

Are there rules for Westkapelle?

A local tourism source says kitesurfing is officially restricted at Westkapelle from 10:00-19:00 in summer but tolerated if there is space and swimmers are kept clear.

What hazards should riders know?

Wave breakers spaced roughly every 150 m at Domburg, large surf at Westkapelle in westerly swell, and tidal current are the main reported hazards.
