Good to know before you go2
- The historic town centres of both Casalbordino and Fossacesia are inland on a hill; don't book a hotel there expecting to walk to the kite spot.
- Fossacesia Marina promenade parking is paid and can be scarce in summer.
The spots
Casalbordino
Casalbordino is a pebble beach on the southern Abruzzo coast, at Lido di Casalbordino, and it mostly works as the fallback when Fossacesia goes offshore.
intermediateadvancedmedium rigging roomIn seasonno month named for this spot
The model here carries the month's average wind rather than a count of windy days: it reaches 10.3 kt in April, the strongest month it models for this spot.
Casalbordino: the long version, the launch and the rules
More on Casalbordino
The pebbles stop at the waterline: the seabed under them is sand. Waves get to about 2 m on nothing more than moderate wind. Push past about 25 knots and the sea turns confused, with a rock arm sitting downwind of the launch to make that worse. That combination keeps it off the beginner list until a local school confirms otherwise. The windier part of the year runs 1 November to 16 April, February being the windiest month by average hourly wind speed, but no kite season or set of best months has been published for this beach. Tides, currents, rescue and the exact bathing-season access are all unconfirmed. Parking is on the lungomare.
Getting on the water
Launch at Lido di Casalbordino with parking on the lungomare. Pebbles in places and fine golden sand in others, reportedly, so expect a mixed edge and bring booties. Under the water it is sand, shelving gently, with semi-submerged breakwaters offshore and the Sinello river mouth closing the beach to the south. Part of the beach is free and part is a managed concession with bar and restaurant.
If it goes wrong
No organised rescue for kitesurfers is published. Sea emergencies go to the coast guard on 1530 or to 112. The beach mixes free stretches with a managed concession that has a bar and restaurant; whether any lifeguard covers the stretch used for launching is unconfirmed, and the rock arm downwind is the reason it matters.
Fossacesia Marina
Fossacesia Marina is an Abruzzo beach on the Costa dei Trabocchi, ridden by kiters and windsurfers off the seafront.

Fossacesia Marina: the long version, the launch and the rules
More on Fossacesia Marina
It works year-round on NW, and on spring mornings under high pressure it can put up a 15-18 knot thermal. The water is chop and small waves over sand, clean and tide independent, with wave breakers to keep track of and a beach that fills with sunbathers in June, July and August. The catch here is legal, and it is recent: a 2025 reorganisation of the seafront created a windsurf and SUP area where kitesurf is expressly prohibited, and the kite zone that used to sit in the southern Lido Galetta concession was not reconfirmed. That leaves Fossacesia Marina with no municipal kitesurf launch area anyone can point at for 2026. Ride it on current signage or with a local school, and note that the Abruzzo bathing period runs 1 June to 13 September 2026, which is exactly when the question bites.
Getting on the water
Long sandy beach on the Fossacesia Marina lungomare, with parking along the seafront - free most of the year, scarce and paid in summer - free showers, and bars and restaurants a short walk away. The shorebreak makes getting in and out the awkward part on almost any day.
If it goes wrong
Nothing kite-specific exists. Bathing assistance on the concessions, and on the free beaches through the comune, runs only in the periods and hours fixed each year by the maritime authority's safety ordinance; the 2026 bathing period is 23 May to 20 September. Outside that window, and outside those daily hours, there is nobody on the beach for you.
Rules and access
2025 Fossacesia municipal news confirms kitesurf is expressly prohibited inside the new dedicated windsurf and SUP launch area, and the same reorganization did not reconfirm the previously designated kitesurf zone in the southern Lido Galetta concession, so no municipal-authorized kitesurf launch area at Fossacesia Marina was found for 2026; check locally before rigging. Regione Abruzzo's 2026 bathing ordinance sets the bathing season from 11 March to 23 November 2026 and the bathing period from 23 May to 20 September 2026, and from 11 March 2026 to 10 March 2027 forbids leaving craft and equipment on the maritime public beach - surf, windsurf and kitesurf named among them - except in racks or in areas specifically set aside or written into a concession title. That same ordinance leaves the launch corridors, the 5 m strip from the waterline and the rescue arrangements to the maritime authority's 2026 safety ordinance, so the corridor a kiter actually needs is set by the Capitaneria rather than by the region.

What riders say
4 recurring claims
Summer is the weak season here, not the good one: the thermal is modest, around 10-15 knots on a decent day, and you can easily spend a week without a session.
majority×4 riders
Fossacesia and Casalbordino are used as a pair — when the wind angle turns offshore at one you drive fifteen minutes to the other.
majority×3 riders
The hard part is the shorebreak and the gusty band close to the beach — getting in and out costs more than the session itself.
majority×2 riders
You will usually have the water to yourself; there is no localism and no queue for the launch.

- Bosco Collerusci nature reserve bordering the Casalbordino coast
- Abbazia di San Giovanni in Venere, a 12th-century Romanesque abbey on a promontory above Fossacesia Marina

History & trivia
- Casalbordino appears in Gabriele D'Annunzio's 1894 novel Il trionfo della morte.
- Fossacesia was heavily bombed in the 1943 Battle of the Sangro and largely rebuilt after WWII (about 60 civilian casualties).
- The Via Verde dei Trabocchi bike path follows the route of a 19th-century Adriatic railway decommissioned in 2004.

FAQ
When is the best time to kite at Fossacesia Marina?
It works year-round with NW wind, and can produce a 15-18 knot spring morning thermal during high pressure.
What is Casalbordino used for?
It's a backup used when the wind at Fossacesia is too offshore, on a pebble beach with a sandy seabed.
What kind of beaches are these?
Casalbordino has a pebble beach and sandy seabed; Fossacesia Marina is an ocean spot on the Costa dei Trabocchi seafront.

4 questions
What we could not settle. Ride here? These are the gaps worth filling.
- Is 'Casalbordino & Fossacesia Marina' the name riders actually use for this area?
- No pricing (lodging, lessons, rentals) found for either spot with a year attached.
- Nearest practical airport (Pescara) distance is an estimate from town coordinates, not a sourced figure.
- No solo-traveller or digital-nomad signal found either way.
